 A CHOCOLATE SLOW COOKER DESSERT

I have such a fun recipe to share today! I previewed a photo of this Crock Pot Hot Fudge Sundae Cake on facebook a couple of days ago and I was so surprised by how many of y’all were excited for me to share this one. Have you ever made a cake in your slow cooker? Did you know you could make a cake in your slow cooker? Well, it turns out you can. And it can turn out really good too!

TIPS FOR MAKING THIS SLOW COOKER CAKE

  • For this recipe, you really need a smaller (2-3 quart) slow cooker. If the slow cooker is too large or wide, the cake may cook very unevenly and you won’t get a proper fudge layer to form. I have not tested it with anything larger so cannot tell you how it would turn out. Bake it at your own risk.
  • I have only tried this with whole and 2% cow’s milk. I have not tried it with almond or oat milk so I can’t say how those would turn out.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)

  • all-purpose flour
  • sugar
  • cocoa powder
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • milk
  • oil
  • vanilla extract
  • chopped nuts (optional)
  • brown sugar
  • hot water
all purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, milk, water, baking powder and a white crock pot.

HOW TO MAKE CROCK POT HOT FUDGE SUNDAE CAKE

Spray a 2-3 quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. For baking, I like to use this kind that has flour in it.

Crock Pot Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.

I don’t own a flour sifter so I just took a long-tined fork and stirred it up real good.

Then stir in milk, oil and vanilla extract.

Give it all a good stir until combined, then fold in nuts (if using). Spread batter evenly into your slow cooker.

In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder.

Stir in hot water until smooth.

Pour this mixture evenly over batter in slow cooker. DO NOT STIR.

Cover and cook on high setting for 2-2 1/2 hours (it took about  2 1/2 hours for mine to bake).

To test if it is done, stick a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean (with no cake batter hanging on it), then it is done. Let cake stand, uncovered for 30-40 minutes before serving (this will thicken the sauce.)

On the top you will have your cake layer. Underneath that cake layer is your fudge sauce. So slice up the cake (it’s okay if it falls apart a little bit on you, this cake comes out very moist). Spoon it up on a plate or bowl. Then scoop up some of that hot fudge sauce that is on the bottom, and drizzle a bit of that on top of your cake along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

  1. When I saw this recipe, I decided that I would make it for our Friday night treat. Soooo, it is now cooling, and it looks really good. I have vanilla ice cream, and am all excited, 'cause I love chocolate.

It was fun making my first dessert (unless you count applesauce)in a Crock Pot. Thanks for the recipe!

  2. I actually own two crock pots and do not use them as much as I would like to. I enjoy coming home to a wonderful slow cooked meal. I would like to use it more. I have a full time job and a small business I have started and seem to be eating out more and/or not as healthy meals. I think I am going to make the hot fudge cake tomorrow for a Valentines dinner tomorrow night at our church for the 50 and older members. Thanks.

  3. I love, love, love my Crock-Pot!!! I've got only one and wish I had, or at least, could win one more. I make a lot of things in them, but I'd have to say that my favorite is Chocolate Raspberry Strata. Yes, the recipe is courtesy of the Crock-Pot. If you love bread pudding, you'll love this!!! 😀

  4. I don't use my crockpot as often as I would like. It gets put away between uses because I don't have much counter space. Maybe if it sat out more, I would use it more. I have never made a dessert in mine either.

  5. Pinned, followed and liked! 🙂 I have a Gooseberry Patch Cookbook that I love – you're right about the recipes! I have a crock pot that I use fairly regularly but I am always looking for more recipes. This cake looks mmmmmmoreish! kevinmorrice@btinternet.com

  6. I have two crock pots and have started making freezer meals. I love the ease of throwing it all in and dinner is made.

  7. I use a square metal slow cooker that I use for everything! Looking forward to trying Hot Fudge Sundae Cake…

  8. I love using my Crock Pot and use it often. Love coming home after a busy day to the smell and convenience of a hot meal waiting for me.

  9. I use my crock pot at least 3-4 times a week. We are a family of 5 and anything that can save me some time is GREATLY appreciated! Tonight I used it to make the Chocolate Sundae cake and it was YUMMY!!! I think vanilla ice cream was good with it but even a mint chip would be awesome!!!

  10. This sounds and looks so good! I love to cook. I was a cook in the military, and now it has pretty much became a hobby. I do quite a bit of cooking in the slow cooker, but I would love to do a lot more, just don't have that many recipes.

  12. I truely LOVE to use my crock pot. I use it more when I am completely buzy but would love to have time to eat!… I turn it on! I do have a problem pre-planning, having food in my cupboards that I would love to eat use my crock pot. I did just decide this morning (without knowing about your book give-a-way to prompt my thinking) that I needed to go shopping with a plan in my head to get food on my table in a timely fasion using my crock pot!

I always have ingredients for making cakes… so maybe I should just change my gears and plan on making desserts every day instead of main dishes!!! 🙂 hehehe!

Really, I would love to try this at my next Creative Memories scrapbooking party in my home next month! A great idea that would help me for sure!!! Thanks for the recipe! 🙂

  13. Oh my goodness your Hot Fudge Sunday Cake looks absolutely delicious, Brandie!! I have 2 crockpots and I love them and use them all the time!! Just made Beef Barley Soup yesterday and Chili last week! I love Gooseberry Patch Cookbooks also. Would love to add this one to my collection 🙂
