 A CHOCOLATE SLOW COOKER DESSERT

I have such a fun recipe to share today! I previewed a photo of this Crock Pot Hot Fudge Sundae Cake on facebook a couple of days ago and I was so surprised by how many of y’all were excited for me to share this one. Have you ever made a cake in your slow cooker? Did you know you could make a cake in your slow cooker? Well, it turns out you can. And it can turn out really good too!

TIPS FOR MAKING THIS SLOW COOKER CAKE

  • For this recipe, you really need a smaller (2-3 quart) slow cooker. If the slow cooker is too large or wide, the cake may cook very unevenly and you won’t get a proper fudge layer to form. I have not tested it with anything larger so cannot tell you how it would turn out. Bake it at your own risk.
  • I have only tried this with whole and 2% cow’s milk. I have not tried it with almond or oat milk so I can’t say how those would turn out.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)

  • all-purpose flour
  • sugar
  • cocoa powder
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • milk
  • oil
  • vanilla extract
  • chopped nuts (optional)
  • brown sugar
  • hot water
all purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, milk, water, baking powder and a white crock pot.

HOW TO MAKE CROCK POT HOT FUDGE SUNDAE CAKE

Spray a 2-3 quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. For baking, I like to use this kind that has flour in it.

In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.

I don’t own a flour sifter so I just took a long-tined fork and stirred it up real good.

Then stir in milk, oil and vanilla extract.

Give it all a good stir until combined, then fold in nuts (if using). Spread batter evenly into your slow cooker.

In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder.

Stir in hot water until smooth.

Pour this mixture evenly over batter in slow cooker. DO NOT STIR.

Cover and cook on high setting for 2-2 1/2 hours (it took about  2 1/2 hours for mine to bake).

To test if it is done, stick a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean (with no cake batter hanging on it), then it is done. Let cake stand, uncovered for 30-40 minutes before serving (this will thicken the sauce.)

On the top you will have your cake layer. Underneath that cake layer is your fudge sauce. So slice up the cake (it’s okay if it falls apart a little bit on you, this cake comes out very moist). Spoon it up on a plate or bowl. Then scoop up some of that hot fudge sauce that is on the bottom, and drizzle a bit of that on top of your cake along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
