I have such a fun recipe to share today! I previewed a photo of this recipe on facebook a couple of days ago and I was so surprised by how many of y’all were excited for me to share this one. Have you ever made a cake in your slow cooker? Did you know you could make a cake in your slow cooker? Well, it turns out you can. And it can turn out really good too!
This particular recipe comes from the new Goosberry Patch cookbook, Slow Cooking All Year ‘Round. If y’all follow my blog, then you know I’m a fan of these Gooseberry Patch cookbooks. Why? Because they are chock full of recipes from everyday home cooks. These are real recipes made in real people’s kitchens everyday.
No test recipes here. Do you ever feel when you buy a new cookbook sometimes and try some of the recipes that you wonder, “Did anyone actually make this??” With so many recipes coming at you from all different angles these days because of the internet and all the thousands of new cookbooks, it’s hard to know the good from the bad.Lots of recipes are not tested. Some aren’t ever made more than once by the recipe creators. But not these recipes. These are tried and true recipes from folks that are your friends, your neighbors and maybe even your Mom and Grandma! Real, everyday recipes (225 to be exact). Sure, we all like to tweak a recipe here and there to make it our own but you know when you try these recipes, the recipe as a whole will work and taste good. This particular book focuses on the slow cooker (a.k.a. the Crock Pot). It gives recipes that can help you use your Crock Pot all year round. Some folks are more inclined to use theirs in the summer months so they don’t have to turn on the oven and heat up the house. But it can be used all the time. And y’all know how much I love my slow cooker, so I was so excited to get this cookbook in my hands!
There are recipes in here for soups, stews, beans, sides, drinks and even dessert! And you know it was the chocolate dessert that screamed out to me to be made. I had to try it as soon as I saw it because I was curious why it was called a Hot Fudge Sundae Cake. I thought, “Where’s the fudge part?” Well, you will see!
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup baking cocoa powder (divided use)
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup milk
1/4 cup oil
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
3 cups hot water
Spray a 2-3 quart slow cooker (see my note above about the size of the slow cooker) with nonstick cooking spray. For baking, I like to use this kind that has flour in it.
In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
I don’t own a flour sifter so I just took a long-tined fork and stirred it up real good.
Then stir in milk, oil and vanilla extract.
Give it all a good stir until combined, then fold in nuts (if using). Spread batter evenly into your slow cooker.
In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder.
Stir in hot water until smooth.
Pour evenly over batter in slow cooker.
DO NOT STIR. I’m breaking out the Caps Lock here to emphasize 🙂
Cover and cook on high setting for 2-2 1/2 hours (it took about 2 1/2 hours for mine to bake).
To test if it is done, stick a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean (with no cake batter hanging on it), then it is done. Let cake stand, uncovered for 30-40 minutes before serving.
So what happens is, on the top, you will have your cake layer. Underneath that cake layer is your fudge sauce. So slice up your cake (it’s okay if it falls apart a little bit on you, this cake comes out very moist). Spoon it up on a plate or bowl. Then scoop up some of that hot fudge sauce that is on the bottom, and drizzle a bit of that on top of your cake.
I think it definitely calls for a scoop of ice cream!

- Spray a 3 quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
- Then stir in milk, oil and vanilla extract.
- Give it all a good stir until combined, then fold in nuts (if using).
- Spread batter evenly into your slow cooker.
- In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar and remaining 4 tbsp. cocoa powder.
- Stir in hot water until smooth.
- Pour evenly over batter in slow cooker. DO NOT STIR.
- Cover and cook on high setting for 2-2 1/2 hours (it took about 2 1/2 hours for mine to bake).
