 A CHOCOLATE SLOW COOKER DESSERT

I have such a fun recipe to share today! I previewed a photo of this Crock Pot Hot Fudge Sundae Cake on facebook a couple of days ago and I was so surprised by how many of y’all were excited for me to share this one. Have you ever made a cake in your slow cooker? Did you know you could make a cake in your slow cooker? Well, it turns out you can. And it can turn out really good too!

TIPS FOR MAKING THIS SLOW COOKER CAKE

  • For this recipe, you really need a smaller (2-3 quart) slow cooker. If the slow cooker is too large or wide, the cake may cook very unevenly and you won’t get a proper fudge layer to form. I have not tested it with anything larger so cannot tell you how it would turn out. Bake it at your own risk.
  • I have only tried this with whole and 2% cow’s milk. I have not tried it with almond or oat milk so I can’t say how those would turn out.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)

  • all-purpose flour
  • sugar
  • cocoa powder
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • milk
  • oil
  • vanilla extract
  • chopped nuts (optional)
  • brown sugar
  • hot water
all purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, milk, water, baking powder and a white crock pot.

HOW TO MAKE CROCK POT HOT FUDGE SUNDAE CAKE

Spray a 2-3 quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. For baking, I like to use this kind that has flour in it.

Crock Pot Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.

I don’t own a flour sifter so I just took a long-tined fork and stirred it up real good.

Then stir in milk, oil and vanilla extract.

Give it all a good stir until combined, then fold in nuts (if using). Spread batter evenly into your slow cooker.

In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder.

Stir in hot water until smooth.

Pour this mixture evenly over batter in slow cooker. DO NOT STIR.

Cover and cook on high setting for 2-2 1/2 hours (it took about  2 1/2 hours for mine to bake).

To test if it is done, stick a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean (with no cake batter hanging on it), then it is done. Let cake stand, uncovered for 30-40 minutes before serving (this will thicken the sauce.)

On the top you will have your cake layer. Underneath that cake layer is your fudge sauce. So slice up the cake (it’s okay if it falls apart a little bit on you, this cake comes out very moist). Spoon it up on a plate or bowl. Then scoop up some of that hot fudge sauce that is on the bottom, and drizzle a bit of that on top of your cake along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

  13. I have three crockpots, one large oval, one large round, and one small round. I use mine at least twice a week and every Holiday I use 2 to 3 of them and my huge roaster. My newest one does not heat very well, not like my older ones.

  14. Yes I have a crockpot, but its old. I use it off and on. I do wish I could use it more but I am not good with recipes and I need more of them to follow.

  15. I have an oval crockpot and I used it today. So easy to make a pot roast. I cook part of the vegetables and meat on high for awhile then turn it down. I add the potatoes later in the day as I like small chunks. My left over post roast will become beef stew in the crockpot tomorrow by adding some tomatoes, and juice and seasonings. I use the crockpot about once a week.

  16. I am a single mom who works 9-5, so I use my Crock Pot regularly to have meals prepared when we get home in the evenings. I even love it overnight for having apple cinnamon steel-cut oatmeal ready to eat in the morning! I would absolutely LOVE a cookbook of slow cooker recipes!!!

  17. I just bought my first Crockpot a couple of months ago. I wanted to make preparing dinner easier and less time consuming since I want to resume my career as a night shift nurse and still have a decent meal for my family to eat. I am hooked! I hit up all my friends for their favorite Crockpot recipes, and I'm still looking for more great recipes. The Crockpot is one of the greatest appliances ever invented. Just wish I'd have gotten one much sooner.

  18. My crockpot used to be used a lot but Dave, my husband, died and I stopped eating. Lately, I've begun making meals and eating again so the crockpot sits on the counter and is used every week. Far easier to cook a meal and then eat until it's gone. At the library today, I saw a newly published crockpot cookbook that was totally unappealing. The good thing about Gooseberry Patch, all the recipes have been taste tested by real families, not cookbook authors.
