OPEN-FACED SLOPPY JOES

I don’t think there is anything quite like good ole Sloppy Joes. I just love them. It is a meal that is so much a part of my childhood. And I like to have a little fun making different versions of the traditional Sloppy Joe. This one has a BBQ twist and my family goes crazy for them! This is a quick little recipe that is perfect for a weeknight meal. The garlic Texas Toast really adds such great flavor and texture!

TIPS FOR MAKING TEXAS TOAST SLOPPY JOES

  • Don’t like tomatoes? You can leave those out.
  • Want more BBQ flavor? Then cut the amount of ketchup in half and add in more BBQ sauce.
  • You can also add in onions and green peppers.
  • Kick up the heat and try adding some chopped jalapeños.
  • You can use any meat for this: ground turkey, chicken or even a plant based meat substitute.
  • Be sure to check out my Chicken Parmesan Pizzas recipe. That one uses garlic Texas toast as a base too and is SO good!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • ground beef – use ground turkey or chicken if you prefer.
  • diced tomatoes – this is optional. We liked the additional flavor it added but it is not necessary.
  • ketchup
  • barbecue sauce – this particular sloppy Joe has a BBQ twist. If. you don’t like BBQ then just pick up a can of Manwich and make it with ground beef and add it to the top of the garlic bread. Or you can try my Homemade Sloppy Joe recipe.
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • sugar (optional) – it balances out a bit of the acidity from the tomatoes. You do not have to add it. If you have a sweet enough BBQ sauce, that will also help as well.
  • garlic Texas toast – I usually just buy the store brand.
  • shredded cheddar cheese

HOW TO MAKE TEXAS TOAST SLOPPY JOES

Brown and crumble ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease.

Return meat to skillet and add in diced tomatoes, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Note: As I said above, the added sugar is optional in this. I think it helps balance out the acidity of the tomatoes. But if you are using a very sweet barbecue sauce then you may not feel the added sugar is necessary. Just go by taste here. Give it all a good stir until combined then cover and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes.

While this is cooking, prepare your garlic Texas toast according to package directions. When bread is ready, spoon filling on top of bread and then sprinkle with shredded cheese. The cheese should melt from the heat of the sloppy Joe mixture.

    1. Hi Hal! You’ll find it in the frozen food section. It’ll usually be near other breads or biscuits and it will actually say on the packaging “Garlic Texas Toast” – Pepperidge Farm makes it & you can also find the store brand. Hope that helps!

This recipe is amazing! Different, easy, and delicious! My husband said it’s a keeper and that he likes it better than regular sloppy joes. Per your directions, I did not add the extra sugar as it was not needed with the ketchup and BBQ sauce brands I used. You are one of my favorite food bloggers! Thank you for all of your delicious recipes!

Thank you for posting! I lost this recipe for a couple of years, now I can make it again! I add a can of rotel with green chilies and a can of black beans to this mixture. The rotel adds a little spice and the beans bulk it up a little.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to come back and let me know how they turned out. So happy you liked this one!
