FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I use marshmallow fluff instead of marshmallows?

I don’t recommend doing this. I recommend using any size marshmallow that you want-mini, regular, or jumbo will all work nicely. Actual marshmallows give much better results than fluff.

Can I double this recipe for thicker bars?

You bet! Just double the recipe but still use a 9×13-inch baking pan and you’ll have super thick treats!

What else can I add for toppings?

You can try using some melted white chocolate, some regular milk chocolate bits or maybe even some red, white, and blue M&M’s! Also, if you like

How can I make these for other holidays?

If you like this idea, you can change out the sprinkles to match any other holiday decoration themes. I do this all the time!

Can I make homemade Rice Krispie Treats ahead of time?

This is a great question and the answer is absolutely! Homemade Rice Krispie Treats can be made ahead of time. Just make sure you store them properly in an airtight container, and they will last for a few days. Make sure they are completely cooled before wrapping them up, otherwise the condensation from the still-warm treats might make them soggy.

How to store Rice Krispie Treats?

If you can resist devouring them all at once, store these little morsels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. And if you’re intent on delaying instant gratification, they can also be frozen for up to three months in an airtight container.

  • salted butter – I know it might seem strange to use salted butter in a sweet dessert but the salt nicely balances out the super sweet flavor. Also, if you’ve never made Rice Krispies Treats before, make sure it is real butter and not margarine. If it’s margarine, it won’t set up properly because margarine is mostly just oil.
  • marshmallows – I mention this above but don’t use marshmallow fluff or cream – it has to be actual marshmallows here. You can use any size, just use the same amount.
  • Rice Krispies cereal – you don’t have to use name brand, the store brand version is just fine!
  • red, white and blue sprinkles – I find most grocery stores will keep the holiday sprinkles on a special aisle in the grocery store (instead of with all the other baking stuff.) So, if you have trouble finding them, go to the aisle where they keep the seasonal things and look there or go to your local craft supply store.

Add in the Rice Krispies cereal and mix until the cereal is fully coated. Add in 4 Tablespoons of sprinkles. Mix until the sprinkles are fully mixed in. Press the mixture into the dish. I find this easiest if I spray my hand with nonstick spray and press it on or you can take a piece of parchment paper and lay it on top and then press and smooth them out. Sprinkle with remaining 2 Tablespoons of sprinkles. Press the sprinkles into the Rice Krispies treats.
