A Strawberry Shortcake Inspired Cake
Strawberry season is almost here! Who else gets excited to go strawberry picking?! This recipe for Strawberry Shortcake Cake is one of my most-requested recipe from family and friends. It’s a super fun take on the Southern Strawberry Shortcake recipe.

Very very good. Made it for my wife who loves strawberry desserts. She couldn’t stop raving about this. Thank you!

Frequently Asked Questions
No. You can use a yellow or French vanilla cake mix for this or even a Funfetti or Rainbow Chip cake mix! Chocolate might be a wonderful contrast of flavors too!
You can usually find strawberry glaze in the fruit section of your grocery store. Most grocers keep it right next to the strawberries. You can also make your own strawberry pie glaze if you have a favorite recipe for it.
Of course! This recipe is customizable to your tastes and preferences. One of my favorite white cake recipes is here.
This cake does need to be kept refrigerated. Cover tightly and it should keep for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. This cake can be frozen but I only recommend freezing without the strawberry topping on.

Ingredients Needed: (See Recipe Card Below For The Full Recipe)
- white (or yellow) cake mix – I think French Vanilla cake mix would also be excellent.
- egg whites, oil and water – whichever cake mix you use, you are going to use the ingredients it calls for on the back of the box.
- cream cheese – see my post on How to Soften Cream Cheese Quickly
- powdered sugar – also called confectioners sugar.
- whipped topping (COOL WHIP) – yes, you can make your own homemade whipped cream if you prefer.
- strawberry glaze – I use the store bought stuff to keep this easy but you can make your own homemade. See my recipe for Strawberries and Cream Bars. There is a simple glaze recipe in that post that works perfect for this cake.
- fresh strawberries

How To Make Strawberry Shortcake Cake
Make cake according to package directions for a 9×13-inch baking dish. Allow the cake to cool. Then make the next layer. In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth. Sir in thawed whipped topping. Mix until combined. Smooth over cooled cake.

In a bowl combine the strawberry glaze with the strawberries. Spread this mixture on top of the cake.

Isn’t this just a pretty and bright cake? And it tastes so good too! Slice and serve. This cake needs to be kept refrigerated.

I made this for the 4th of July and added a few blueberries to give it a red, white and blue theme. My family loved it! Every recipe I’ve tried from this site has been great!
Love that idea Suzy!! So cute! Thank you so much for your sweet comment and for taking the time to come back here to let me know!! 🙂
So good! I made this for my hubby for Father’s Day at his request and he loved it. So did I! It tastes light and so delicious. Thanks so much!
You were so sweet to whip this up for him! I am so happy you all loved it!! Thank you so much for coming back to comment! 🙂
Family, friends and work colleagues all love it when I bring this cake to functions.
Made this cake for my husband’s birthday today. My kids said it was the best cake I’ve ever made. My only adjustment: fresh strawberries mixed with honey and I didn’t use any glaze. Still sweet and yummy! Thank you.
Can you poke holes into the cake and pour the glaze over it and then top it with the frosting and fresh strawberries? Or is the glaze too thick to be poured over the cake?
Hi – this recipe caught my eye, so beautiful!
I will make it for mother’s Day tomorrow.
I have tried many of your recipes and they have ALL been good!
Thanks,
B
Well, it was a hit at Mother’s Day. One piece left to take home to eat tomorrow
.they all loved it!
Awww – thank you so much for that!! You are so very sweet to let me know. It makes my day!!
I made this for a catering event and everyone loved it.. Didn’t expect to have the cream cheese taste when they tasted it. It was bomb. Thanks for sharing
Oh wow! That is SO great to hear!! Thank you for coming back to let me know!
Do you grease the cake pan?
Just spray the bottom with a bit of nonstick cooking spray.
Thank you for this. I made it and it was delicious! !! Mt family and friends loved it. It was for our daughter’s birthday.
Can I use my own frozen strawberries for this?
I made this strawberry shortcake today and it is the bomb. The pics don’t do it justice. The whole family loved it. Needless to say it didn’t last long I will definitely be making it again soon.
Hi Christina! Thank you so very much for coming back to let me know! I always love hearing about successes 🙂
I’ve made this cake several times and its always a hit! Made several for my sons graduation dinner at his request. Just finished making one today for a friend.
Thank you SO much for coming back to let me know! I love hearing about the successes. Sometimes, we tend to only hear the negative so it brightens my day to hear the wonderful ones – thank you!
This recipe looks wonderful and I would love to make it for a ladies group, however I have a question about the additional ingredients for the cake mix. Are they used instead of the ingredients called for on the box or as additional ingredients, and what are the amounts?
I wonder if I could use pudding to make it a little more fluffy and firm at the same time? Has anyone tried it?
Made this deliciousness the other night for a family get together. Altered it in a different way by making 2-9" circle cakes, layered with the whipped topping mixture and strawberries. The results? Let's just say…there were no leftovers. It was a HUGE hit.
THANKS SO MUCH for the awesome recipe! 🙂 Will definitely be remaking it in the near future.
Just made this today & it is sooooo delicious!! I drizzled melted white chocolate over the top & added some to the creamy layer. Just divine! 🙂
Although unusual, I think I will be making this for a thanksgiving dessert to bring to a relative's house! I think it'll taste light and refreshing after gorging on all the heavy and fillings foods during dinner! I don't care if it's not season appropriate! (:
Just made this. I didn't use the store bought glaze, but made some homemade. I'll refrigerate it overnight and cut it tomorrow. Can't wait!
I just cut a piece this morning. My husband and I shared it. It is delicious! Will definitely make this again. Our local strawberries will be coming in in just a couple of weeks, and will give me the opportunity to use fresh ones for this recipe.
Question about the egg whites …..do u use egg whites in place of eggs or in addition to the eggs and how many
I've been making a recipe very similiar to this one for almost 50 years. I would make it in layers in round or square pans and sometimes I wouldn't frost the sides and make it look more like a torte. I would freeze it and slice it with a warm knife. It was my mother-in-law's recipe and my husband and my children's birthday favorite! It was also great to keep one in the freezer for unexpected company.
I have made this cake twice. The first time the family loved it sooo much. But we like less cake and more filling, so I cut the 9X13 cake into two layers and put the cream cheese mixture and the strawberries in the middle and again on the top layer. So good my family says it's the best cake they ever tasted. Love your recipe.
Made this for a ladies lunch, it was easy and so good, its a keeper. Thanks for all of the great recipes. You are making me look good! LOL
Pam
It is also very good with blueberries and blueberry glaze. I've always used sliced angel food cake as the bottom layer.
I have made this before, only used canned cherry pie filling on top. I think fresh strawberries are gonna take it over the top! Very good!
We made this two weeks ago and loved it so much we are making it again for our Swim Sunday get together! Thanks for sharing, Michelle L.
So happy to hear this turned out well for you! Thank you so much for letting me know! 🙂
I made this recipe over the weekend for a cookout, it was a hit! It was so delicious and easy to make. Thanks for sharing! I directed everyone to your site for the recipe!
I just love this recipe and it is so simple!
Bran! Congrats on having this recipe featured at Gooseberry Patch Roundup! WOWEEEEEE!!! My hubs family is having a get together this weekend and I'm planning to make this for everyone..already have the sugar free glaze in the fridge. Thanks for sharing your awesome cake recipes!!
I made this recipe today for our Sunday dinner and it it was a HIT!! The family LOVED it! I just love easy and flavorful desserts and this sure was one! Look forward to trying some of the other recipes on this site!!
I made this cake yesterday– it was dessert for our Easter dinner. It was FANTASTIC. RAVE reviews from everyone!! My younger son was so quiet while he was eating it… I asked him if he was OK. He said "Yes, Mom… but this is so good I don't want to talk or even think about anything else!" LOL! Thank you for making our Easter dessert so yummy!
Jacelyn, I don't see why not. I've never made it with the angel food cake but I think it should work. The angel food cake is, of course, has a very different texture from the white cake but I think the tastes should still work together.
Brandie,
Do you think this would work with a angel food cake box cake? That's all I have in my pantry right now! 🙁
Got everything else, though!
Ohh yummm!! This cake looks incredible! I love the lightness of the whipped topping with the strawberries – fav part of strawberry shortcake & now there's cake too! Delish!
I just made this and we are in love!!
Beautiful! 🙂 I love strawberry shortcakes!
