FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is magic shell?

Magic shell is a fun, liquid chocolate ice cream topping that hardens once it hits the cold ice cream.

How does the magic shell harden?

It hardens because the coconut oil goes back to a solid state at room temperature and is a liquid when warmed up. So once the magic shell hits the cold ice cream, the coconut oil in it immediately starts to go back to its solid form.

What type of chocolate is best to be used with this?

This is a personal preference. I like to use Hershey’s milk chocolate. But any chocolate will work, dark, semi-sweet or even white chocolate work. Use what you like best.

Can I use shortening or butter instead of coconut oil?

No, this recipe only works well (and tastes best) with coconut oil.

Should I use refined or unrefined coconut oil?

I like to use refined coconut oil because it has less of a coconut flavor to it.

Can I use freeze dried marshmallows?

You can use those teeny tiny marshmallows (similar to what are used in the packets of hot cocoa) in place of the mini marshmallows. However, you will have a different texture to your magic shell.

How do I toast the mini marshmallows like the pictures?

You can place mini marshmallows on a baking sheet and use a kitchen torch to toast them. Let them cool slightly and then place them on top of the magic shell.

How do I store leftovers?

This can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature where it will keep for up to 1 month. To reheat, you will just need to place it in the microwave (in a microwave-safe container) for 20-30 seconds until it has thinned back out.
