Frequently Asked Questions:
If you enjoy extra sauce, consider doubling the mayonnaise and Dijon mixture and serving some on the side for dipping.
This recipe works as a meal on its own, but it pairs well with many options like potato chips, French fries, tater tots, pasta salad, cole slaw, fresh fruit, a nice big green side salad, or maybe even some soup!
Pre-toasting helps the bread stay crispy and prevents it from becoming soggy once the sauce and toppings are added.
Yes. Cook the toast according to the air fryer directions on the box (almost all of them have it these days.) Then continue with the recipe as written and air fry until ham is warm and cheese is melted. Air fryer cooking times may vary depending on the model.
They’re best enjoyed fresh, but you can prepare the sauce and have the ingredients ready to assemble when needed.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For best results, reheat in the oven or air fryer to help restore the crisp texture of the toast. The microwave works as well, but the bread will be softer.
You can also freeze assembled leftovers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Ingredients Needed: (See Recipe Card Below For The Full Recipe)
- garlic Texas toast– the thick slices hold up well to the toppings and become perfectly crispy in the oven. You can use the store brand. I recently tried Aldi’s garlic Texas toast and thought it was pretty good and had a great price.
- mayonnaise– if you’ve been here a minute, you know I am not a fan of Miracle Whip (so sorry Miracle Whip lovers!) but if you enjoy it, don’t let me stop you.
- Dijon mustard– adds flavor without overpowering the sandwich. I recommend this over yellow mustard. Yellow mustard can be more “vinegary” and may overpower the other flavors. Stone-ground mustard can be substituted for Dijon if you’d like a little extra texture.
- ham– thinly sliced deli ham works great, but leftover holiday ham is also a fantastic option. You just don’t want it too thick or it won’t warm up enough by the time the cheese is fully melted.
- Swiss cheese– melts beautifully and pairs perfectly with the ham and Dijon sauce. Other cheese options include provolone, mozzarella, or white cheddar. You can really have fun here and go with what you love!

How To Make Ham and Swiss Texas Toast
Cook the toast and make the sauce
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a sheet tray with parchment paper. Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet and cook on the middle rack for 5 minutes. Flip the toast over and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until the edges are a little crispy. You do not want the bread to be soft. While the toast is baking, stir together the mayonnaise and dijon in a medium-sized bowl.

Make an indentation in the cooked toast
Once cooked, remove the toast from the oven. Press in the center of the toast with the back of a spoon.

Spread on sauce and add ham
Spread the sauce evenly on top of each slice. Tear the ham into pieces and add to the toasts.

Add cheese then put back into the oven
Place a piece of cheese on top, you may need to tear it to fit. Place back into the oven for 4-5 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted.

Sprinkle a little dried parsley on top of desired and serve.
