FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What size chuck roast is best to use?

This recipe will work no matter what your chuck roast size. I suggest using a somewhere between two to three pounds. But if your roast is a little under two pounds or closer to a pound and a half, or a little over three pounds, it isn’t going to break the recipe. It will still turn out just fine. You may have less servings or more than my recipe would make, but it will still be delicious.

What could I use besides chuck roast?

You could use a beef brisket (just make sure it fits in your slow cooker). You could also use a flat iron steak or you could even make this with a pork roast!

What’s the best bun to use?

I would suggest using a softer bun. I liked using a brioche bun, I felt like it was the perfect bun to use. A white sandwich bun would also work nicely.

What if I don’t like Dr. Pepper?

Well, you don’t actually taste the Dr. Pepper flavors in this dish. The soda just helps give added sweetness and tenderizes the meat a bit.

Should I brown the chuck roast first?

Browning the roast is not required, but it would help bring more flavor and color to the dish if that is something you are looking for.

How to store leftovers?

Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

  • onion powder
  • garlic salt
  • smoked paprika – I absolutely love the slightly smokiness this adds. You could also add a small drop of liquid smoke as well.
  • garlic – you can use fresh or the jarred stuff here.
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Dr Pepper  – don’t like Dr Pepper, you can use any dark soda you prefer. You can even use diet soda.

HOW TO MAKE CROCK POT DR PEPPER SHREDDED BEEF:

Add sliced onions in the bottom of a 6 quart slow cooker. Place the chuck roast on top of the sliced onions. Season the roast with onion powder, garlic salt, smoked paprika, black pepper and minced garlic. In a bowl, mix together Worcestershire sauce, Dr. Pepper and bbq sauce.

Pour the sauce around the sides of the roast. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours on low or 6 hours on high until tender. Do not remove the lid while cooking. This allows steam to escape and you may end up with tough meat that is hard to shred. Just set it and forget it! When done, shred the beef with 2 forks (discard any fatty bits) and stir it around the sauce.

I used a pork roast and it turned out excellent. Choose your bbq sauce wisely. It seems to give the most flavour. I only had sizzling chipotle. Good thing I like spicy. Thanks for a great recipe Brandie!

You can’t taste the Dr Pepper but you can tell it’s giving it that extra bit of flavor. Turned out great!
