Kielbasa and Tortellini Skillet

This one pan recipe only takes a few simple ingredients like kielbasa, tortellini, peppers and onions and can be ready within half an hour! Perfect for busy weeknights!

A 20-MINUTE DINNER RECIPE

If you’re in need of a quick dinner to toss together on the fly, this Kielbasa and Tortellini Skillet will be just that. It comes together quickly in one pan with minimal cleanup. I don’t know about you, but when I’m cooking, I always think of the amount of mess I’m making. I love cooking but hate the cleanup, anyone else? Plus, it combines a filling and hearty pasta with some protein and veggies so it’s a nice balanced meal too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 

Can I use a different sausage?

Yes, this recipe will work with any other smoked sausage that you enjoy. It does not have to be Kielbasa.

What else can I use in place of tortellini?

I will say that tortellini holds up best in this recipe. But cappelletti or ravioli would probably be other good alternatives. Just be careful when stirring so they don’t break open.

Can I double this recipe?

Sure, just make sure you’re using a skillet big enough to hold everything.

Isn’t this technically two pans, not one?

I call this a one pan meal but technically it is two if you are using frozen tortellini. Frozen tortellini will need to be boiled first. If you are using the fresh stuff in the refrigerated section, you won’t need to do that here. You can pop it in the skillet when you add the chicken broth then cover it and cook for a few minutes until warmed through.

But I hate peppers, what do I do?

Just omit the peppers if you hate them. No problem.

What to serve with Kielbasa and Tortellini Skillet?

This skillet dinner meal is pretty well balanced as it is. However, you could make a side green salad or serve with some more steamable vegetables. Some Garlic Breadsticks or Garlic Bread would be a nice addition.

How long does Kielbasa and Tortellini Skillet last?

You can keep the leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. You could attempt to freeze leftovers for up to 3 months in a freezer appropriate container. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat when needed.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • kielbasa– sliced. Any other smoked sausage will work. Just make sure it is smoked sausage – not raw. Raw needs to be cooked first before using.
  • red and yellow bell peppers – If you like green pepper, you could switch that out.
  • yellow onion
  • salt and pepper
  • cheese tortellini– I grabbed the frozen tortellini because it is usually cheaper but if you don’t want to take the time to boil it, just pick up some fresh tortellini in the refrigerated section. This won’t require boiling first. You can pop it in the skillet when you add the chicken broth then cover it and cook for a few minutes until warmed through.
  • garlic cloves – I prefer fresh minced garlic, but you could use the pre minced stuff in a jar if in a pinch.
  • chicken stock– or you can use chicken broth. Homemade Chicken Broth would work nicely here too.
  • Italian seasoning
  • paprika – this is optional. If you don’t have it, just skip it.
  • red pepper flakes– an optional ingredient used to bring a little heat.
  • onion powder and garlic powder – you can really season this however you wish. I just try to use things in the easy meals that most folks would have in their pantry.
  • shredded mozzarella cheese – you can have fun and switch up the cheese. Use what you love. Like a little heat? Try pepper jack!

HOW TO MAKE KIELBASA AND TORTELLINI SKILLET:

In a skillet over medium heat add the kielbasa, peppers, onion, avocado oil, salt, and pepper. Stir for 7 minutes.

While the kielbasa is cooking, cook the tortellini according to the directions and drain. Set aside. To the skillet with the kielbasa add the garlic. Stir for 1 minute.

To the skillet add the cooked tortellini, chicken stock, Italian seasoning, paprika, red pepper flakes, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir for 2-3 minutes.

Top with mozzarella. Turn off the heat and add a lid for 2 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Top with dried parsley.

Ingredients

  • 13.5 ounce package kielbasa, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 yellow pepper, diced
  • ½ cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 19 ounce package cheese tortellini
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ cup chicken stock or broth
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or more to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat add 13.5 ounce package kielbasa, sliced, 1 red bell pepper, diced, 1 yellow pepper, diced, ½ cup finely chopped yellow onion, 1 Tablespoon oil, ¼ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Stir for and cook for about 7 minutes.

  • While the kielbasa is cooking, cook 19 ounce package cheese tortellini to the package directions and drain. Set aside.
  • To the skillet with the kielbasa add 2 garlic cloves, minced. Stir for 30 second to 1 minute (until fragrant).

  • To the skillet add the cooked tortellini, ½ cup chicken stock or broth, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon paprika, ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (if using), ¼ teaspoon onion powder and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder. Stir for 2-3 minutes and allow everything to get coated in the seasonings.

  • Top with 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Turn off the heat and cover with a lid until the cheese has melted.

    I really liked this. I added a cornstarch slurry to thicken it a bit. I do wish I had added some corn or green beans, but otherwise it was perfect.
