FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Do I need to “heat treat” my cake mix?

Yes, you can if you prefer. Heat treating is where you bake or microwave flour to kill off any potential bacteria that might be exist in the flour. You can spread the dry cake mix evenly on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake it at 350 degrees F for about 5 minutes. Allow it to cool completely before continuing with the recipe.

What types of Chex cereal can be used for Puppy Chow?

For this recipe, since it is flavored, if you are going to use another flavor (besides the regular rice Chex), I would only recommend corn. That would be the best other than the rice that we use in this recipe. It won’t mess with the final taste of the recipe.

Can I use another cake mix flavor for puppy chow?

Absolutely! This will work with any and all of your favorite cake mix flavors! Chocolate, lemon, strawberry, yellow, etc. You can still add the sprinkles for added color but it would not be necessary.

What are the best sprinkles to use?

We prefer using non-pareils for this recipe (the little tiny colored candy balls). They are smaller and are more apt to stick to the cereal itself and less likely to “bleed” from the heat. You can also use “jimmies” (the longer, thinner colored candy sprinkles). They are larger but can be used in a pinch if you want. Also you can switch out the colors of your sprinkles for different holidays!

Do you have to use candy melts?

If you can’t find white candy melts or do not want to use them, you can use white chocolate chips or almond bark for this recipe.

How do you store leftover puppy chow?

This is best stored in the refrigerator where it doesn’t have a chance to melt, store in an airtight container or ziptop bag and it will keep for up to 10 days. This can also be frozen! You can make it ahead of time and freeze it in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving. I actually love to eat this when it is cold!

Melted candy melts in bowl.

Add the melted candy to the cereal. Gently toss with a rubber spatula, making sure not to crush the cereal pieces.

Chex cereal stirred into melted candy melts.

Add the sprinkles in by the tablespoon, gently stirring the whole time.

Sprinkles added to chocolate and chex cereal.

Add the cake mix and powdered sugar to a large freezer bag, seal it, and shake to mix it. Open the bag, add the candy-coated cereal, close the bag, and gently shake to coat the cereal.
