FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S):

What if I can’t find chocolate Chex mix?

If you can’t find chocolate Chex, just use more rice or corn Chex. Or, use whatever variety of Chex cereal you like, just make sure you use 9 cups.

Can I use a different combo of Chex Mix?

Absolutely! Customize this treat all you want. As long as you have 9 cups of any kind of Chex Mix this recipe should work just fine.

Can I trade out ingredients?

You bet. This is the perfect treat to customize to your tastes. Only like pecans? Just add pecans, want white chocolate chips instead of peanut butter chips? No problem!

How do you suggest I store these to give as a gift?

These muddy buddies are perfect for gift giving! Add this to a mason jar or other kind of covered container that you can personalize with some ribbon or string. Attach a little tag and you have a delicious homemade gift! If you’d like, you could even attach the recipe in case they want to make it for themselves.

Can you freeze this?

Yes! I actually keep this stored in the freezer and eat it straight from the freezer. It is AMAZING frozen!

How to store Chex Mix Muddy Buddies?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, and freezer up to 3 months.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • corn, rice and chocolate Chex cereals – you can use any combination of the Chex cereals that you enjoy. If you only like the rice Chex that just use that.
  • mini pretzels – these muddy buddies are inspired by Chex mix so I’m using pretzels since those are in a traditional Chex mix. If you don’t like or don’t want pretzels, just leave them out. This recipe is easily customizable.
  • mixed nuts – honey roasted nuts would also be good! If you just want peanuts or cashews, then you can substitute those.
  • peanut butter chips – these won’t be melted, they will just be added to the final product.
  • semi sweet chocolate chips – you could even use dark chocolate. I would not recommend milk chocolate only because these are already pretty sweet and the semi-sweet chips help balance it out.
  • creamy peanut butter – use nutella in place of peanut butter for an even more chocolatey treat.
  • salted butter – it needs to be real butter and not margarine for these to set up properly.

HOW TO MAKE CHEX MIX MUDDY BUDDIES

Add the corn Chex, rice Chex, chocolate Chex, pretzels and mixed nuts into a large bowl. Stir gently then set aside. In a medium-sized, microwave-safe bowl, create the coating by combining chocolate chips, peanut butter and salted butter. Microwave the mixture in 15-30 second intervals, stirring between each until it becomes a smooth melted consistency. Finally add the vanilla and stir.

Pour the chocolate coating on top of the Chex ingredients in the large bowl and gently stir to combine making sure it is all coated. Working in batches and using a zip-top bag, take about 2 cups of the Chex mix mixture. Add about ⅓ cup of powdered sugar, seal the bag, and toss thoroughly to ensure everything is coated. If needed, add more powdered sugar until it reaches your desired level of coating.

Transfer the coated mixture to a large bowl and repeat until all of the Chex Mix is coated. The amount of powdered sugar you use will depend on how heavily coated you prefer your Muddy Buddies. Finally, making sure the mixture isn’t still warm, toss the peanut butter chips and chocolate chips in with the Chex Mix.
