FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can these egg rolls be made in the Air Fryer?

Yes! In fact, we like making these in the Air Fryer too. You won’t get the same super crispy, deeper golden brown color that you’d get with deep frying them though.
To make these in the Air Fryer, make sure the wrappers are sprayed all over with a non-stick cooking spray (I prefer olive oil) place in air fryer basket (making sure there is space between them) and air fry at 375F for 5 minutes. Flip them over and bake for another 5 minutes.
Also, be sure to spray your wrappers again before rolling them in the cinnamon sugar or they might not get coated well.

Can these be made in the oven?

Sure thing! Again, keep in mind, you will not get the same crispiness or beautiful brown color you get with deep frying. Preheat the oven to 425F. Bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through that cooking time.

Why did my egg rolls unwrap while cooking?

This typically happens if you didn’t wrap them tight enough or they didn’t seal well. Wrapping tight and making sure to use that flour/water mixture to moisten the edges is essential so they don’t unroll.

Can I use smaller apple pieces?

You bet! I used smaller apple chunks in my easy apple danishes. If you want to use smaller ones, check out that post to see how we used a knife in the can to cut the apples in the pie filling into smaller chunks.

What else can I add?

I already dip these in caramel sauce, but you can also dip them in chocolate sauce, whipped cream, butterscotch sauce, etc. You can also add some nuts that you could roll them into, kind of like a caramel covered apple that gets dipped into nuts.
Additionally, you can serve these with some ice cream and whipped cream for a lovely treat that’s really reminiscent of an apple pie.

Can I use other pie filling?

Yes! Most any pie filling would work and would be delicious!

How to store leftovers?

These Apple Egg Rolls are best served the same day that you make them. If you have to store them, leftovers should be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Reheat them in the oven on a wire rack over a sheet tray so the heat can cook from all sides. Or reheat in the microwave.
DON’T try to reheat them in the fryer because they’ll burn with the cinnamon and sugar coating. Additionally, I don’t recommend freezing these treats.

HOW TO MAKE APPLE PIE EGG ROLLS

In a small bowl, whisk together the water and flour. Set aside. On a clean work surface, lay an egg roll wrapper with one of the pointy ends facing you. Place ⅓ cup of the apple pie filling at the bottom third of the wrapper. Take that bottom corner and fold it up over the filling.

Dip a finger into the water/flour mixture and moisten all the exposed edges of the wrapper really well. Tuck both sides (left and right) of the wrapper over the filling. Continue to tightly roll until you make a little log and everything is sealed. Place on a platter while you continue rolling the rest of the egg rolls. Note: if the wrapper isn’t sealing tightly, add a little more of the water/flour mixture on the inside of the wrapper and seal again. You want these wrapped very tightly so they don’t unroll while frying. This mixture acts as a glue for the wrapper.

Fill your deep fryer with oil (to the oil line) and preheat to 350°F. If you don’t have a deep fryer, you can use a dutch oven or other heavy pot and fill with 4 inches of oil and preheat to 350°F. Place a wire rack over a baking sheet and set aside (you’ll use this to put your finished egg rolls on later.) If you don’t have a wire rack, that’s ok, just use a baking sheet. In a small, shallow bowl, stir together the sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Very carefully place 3-4 egg rolls into the deep fryer basket, lower the basket and fry until golden brown, 3-4 minutes. If using a dutch oven, you’ll want to flip them a time or two to make sure they brown evenly. Lift the deep fryer basket up and allow it to drain. Using tongs, take one of the egg rolls out and immediately place it into the cinnamon sugar and roll it around until coated. Place the coated eggroll on the prepared wire rack to catch any excess cinnamon sugar.

Notes

  • Please refer to my FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) and ingredient list above for other substitutions or for the answers to the most common questions.
  • It’s normal to have extra cinnamon and sugar. It’s so you can roll the egg rolls in them without fear of running out.
  • These are best the same day that you make them. If you need to keep leftovers, refrigerate them and reheat in the oven or microwave.
  • I show making each egg roll one at a time but depending on the size of your fryer, you can do 3 or 4 at a time.
  • Seal them really well and as tight as possible when rolling so none of the filling will leak out.
  • I found one can of apple pie filling made 7 egg rolls but you can obviously double or triple the recipe to make more.
  • These can be made in the Air Fryer and oven as well (see above instructions in the FAQ)

I am making these tomorrow. I got the egg roll wrappers and I just made homemade apple pie filling so I have to let it cool before I put them together. I use a beaten egg with a little water to seal them. I can’t wait to try them.

Just a tip for anyone that has never made an egg roll before, after you fold the corner facing you over the filling, make sure that the points on the two corners you fold inward meet just overlapping a bit. Roll it taut, but not too tight and you won’t have to worry about the filling leaking out into the oil.
