FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What kind of apples are best?

I used Honeycrisp apples for this recipe. Since this is a sweeter recipe, using a more tart baking apple holds up best to the sweetness and it also doesn’t turn to mush. Granny Smith, Braeburn, Golden Delicious and Jonagold all would work well with this recipe.

What can I serve this with?

While these are great on their own, you can absolutely add a dipping sauce or glaze. We like to eat these with caramel sauce or a powdered sugar glaze. To make the powdered sugar glaze, you can just whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar and 2-3 teaspoons of milk until you get your desired consistency.

Do I have to preheat my air fryer?

For this recipe you do not have to preheat the air fryer first. This is something you always want to look for on air fryer recipes. It can make a difference whether it needs to be preheated or not. Air Fryers preheat pretty fast.

What air fryer did you use?

I use a 4 quart basket air fryer. A basket fryer cooks differently from a flat toaster air fryer and that cooks differently from one of those Ninja air fryer attachments for their all-in-one cookers. There are many different air fryers out there these days and they do differ. Some cook faster and some cook slower. This recipe is made for a basket air fryer so if you’re using another style, just use your best judgement for adjusting recipe time. It will usually be close in time but keep an eye out.

Why do you double coat these?

This really helps get that nice crust on the outside of the Apple Fries. It makes sure that it comes out with a nice crispy coating.

How do I store leftovers?

These are best eaten when they are fresh so I do not recommend storing; but they will keep for up to 1-2 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat: place back in your air fryer and cook at 350F degrees until heated through.

Notes

  • Olive oil nonstick spray is best for air fryer baskets as it doesn’t “gunk” up the basket and leave a residue over time.
  • Serve with caramel or a homemade powdered sugar sauce.
  • Cooking times vary from what air fryer you use. See above on how I address that.
  • A variety of apples can be used, we use Honeycrisp, but other suggestions are listed above.
