Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I just use taco seasoning instead of all the extras?

Sure. You can use strictly only taco seasoning if you want. I wanted to try and give it a bump in flavor and I think the extra seasonings do that, but, if you don’t want have them on hand, just go with taco seasoning.

What to serve with Taco Texas Toast?

I like to serve these with some of my favorite veggies and a salad. You can use those simple frozen veggies that you steam in the microwave and toss together whatever salad you enjoy. Additionally, I think they’d be great with Air Fryer Street Corn.

How do I keep the Texas Toast from getting soggy?

Pre-baking the toast helps create a crisp base. Pressing the center slightly also helps hold the filling without making it too soft. Additionally, being sure to flip the toast to bake both sides helps it stay firm. If you like it softer, then don’t flip.

Can I make these ahead of time?

You can prepare the meat mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Assemble and bake the toast just before serving for the best texture.

How to store leftover Taco Texas Toast?

You can keep the Taco Texas Toast in the refrigerator for up to 4 days wrapped in foil or in an airtight container. You can reheat them just until they’re warmed in the air fryer or pop them in the oven.

Ingredients Needed: (See Recipe Card Below For The Full Recipe)

  • lean ground beef – you can switch it up and use ground chicken, ground turkey or even ground pork. I know the cost of ground beef has become pretty expensive so use what works best for you and your budget.
  • packet taco seasoning mix– you can use a packet of whatever brand you typically buy, or you can use your Homemade Taco Seasoning.
  • garlic powder, onion powder and ground cumin – I wanted to “jazz up” the taco seasoning a bit but if you want to use just the taco seasoning, you can.
  • water – you are not going by the amount of water on the back of the packet. Please use the amounts iH ave listed below in the recipe card.
  • salsa– just go with whatever brand you like. I tend to like Herdez mild salsa, but, honestly, I usually end up grabbing whatever one is on sale.
  • garlic Texas toast – any brand works here. Some brands require you to flip the toast while baking and others don’t. In this case, I wanted to make sure the toast came out crispy so I did flip it.
  • shredded cheddar cheese– You can trade out the cheese option. Instead of cheddar cheese, try Pepper Jack, Mexican cheese blend, or Colby Jack, etc.
  • your favorite taco toppings- sour cream, diced tomatoes, green onion, etc

How To Make Taco Texas Toast

Preheat the oven to 425° F. In a large skillet, add the ground beef over medium heat. Cook and crumble until fully cooked, and the juices run clear, 8-10 minutes. Discard any excess grease. Add the taco seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin, cook for 1 minute until fragrant, stirring constantly. Stir in the water and salsa, simmer until most of the water is evaporated but it is still saucy, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes.

While the beef is cooking, place Texas toast slices on a baking sheet and cook on the middle rack for 5 minutes. Flip the toast over and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until the edges are a little crispy. You do not want the bread to be soft. Once cooked, remove from the oven. Press the center of the toast with the back of a spoon.
