FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I use homemade pizza dough?

Yes, if you would rather have a homemade recipe that you use you can absolutely do that.

What flavor string cheese is the best?

We like to go with mozzarella, but you can absolutely play around with the flavors, try cheddar, monterey jack, pepper jack, etc.

Can I use something other than string cheese?

If you want you can place fresh sliced mozzarella down the center as well. That creates a really tasty and gooey experience. I don’t recommend shredded cheese as the filling since it doesn’t hold up as well.

How can I spice up these cheese sticks?

Try sprinkling the tops with a little black pepper or red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.

Where do I find pizza dough in the grocery store?

Most grocery stores now cary a pre-made pizza dough ball in a plastic bag. Sometimes they are frozen and are in the frozen section. Other times they are fresh and in the refrigerated section of your grocery store. If you can’t find those, then go with the tube, rectangle pizza dough (made by Pillsbury) found near the canned biscuits.

How do I store leftover cheese sticks?

These are best eaten right away but you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. To reheat place in the oven at 350F degrees for 5-7 minutes. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Just wrap very well so they don’t get freezer burned.

HOW TO MAKE CHEESE STUFFED BREADSTICKS:

Preheat the oven to 425F degrees. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray or line with parchment paper. Stretch and roll one package of pizza dough into a flat rectangle shape, making sure it is about ¼ inch thick across.

Pizza dough stretched into a rectangle.

Place the string cheese in two rows, about 1-2 inches apart from each other on top of the dough.

Stretch and roll the second pizza dough to the same size and shape as the first dough. Then carefully lay the second dough directly on top of the first dough and string cheese.

Pizza dough laid over top of string cheese on pizza dough.

Press down firmly between each cheese stick to close the seams between each piece. Pinch the ends of each piece to secure the cheese.

Pizza dough pressed around breadsticks and edges.

Using a pizza cutter, cut each breadstick out and separate the pieces from each other. Sprinkle the tops with the Italian shredded cheese blend.

Cut individual breadsticks.

Place the breadsticks 2-3 inches apart from each other on the baking sheet.  Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until fully cooked. While the breadsticks are cooking, mix together the melted butter and garlic paste (or powder). Remove breadsticks from the oven, and brush garlic butter over the tops. Sprinkle the tops with a little dried parsley and dried basil (optional).
