About

My name is Brandie and I grew up as a Navy brat and then eventually I married a Navy man. My husband is out of the military now and we proudly call Virginia our home.
I'm a wife and a Momma and all things in between. When I was a kid, I loved to put together food. I can remember the first thing I ever learned to cook was a fried egg. Then I moved up to crepes filled with grape jelly. At the age of 12, I thought that was very gourmet apparently.  I got busy with work and life and for years I didn't cook much at all. Then when my son was born, I was able to stay at home with him for a couple of years and I began to reacquaint myself with my kitchen and my love of cooking.  I remembered all those things I loved about feeding the people I love.
I'm a regular homecook like most of you, doing my best to get a good meal on the table for my family. I like to say the recipes on here are country cookin' for today's busy cook. You can still get a good meal on the table, with a few shortcuts to help you along the way.  I hope you'll find lots of recipes here that you'll love and hopefully will become family favorites.

I love everything about your website! I love the heading, the recipes, the pics with the recipes, and to read the great comments that others write. I come here often and have never been disappointed with one of your recipes. Thanks for sharing!

I'm not a real good cook, but your recipes seem very user friendly. I made the baked ziti and the amazing pasta salad so far and my hubby and I loved them. It's very helpful how you take pictures of the ingredients and also the various steps as you are cooking/preparing. Thank you so much for posting all of these recipes. I can't wait to try more!!!

Just found your site - it was "suggested" on Facebook, however that happens. Wonderful recipes...see lots of things I can't wait to try. Also want to say - when I checked out the Bacon and Tomato pie - your son's shirt caught my eye. I knew then - why the recipes seem "true to home". I'm the sister of a Hokie, and the mother of a Hokie (and a Wahoo) - so I'll be following your site. I do love the farming and cooking life!

Love all of your recipes. I make a lot of them. Keep up the good work.

Brandie,
You are an inspiration to me! I love the look of your "new" website. I'm trying to start a website and things I like about this one - bright, less clutter, I like the older posts in a column on the right, the buttons for different pages on your site look very neat and clean, too. I like the white background, too.
You have had some of the most interesting recipes and I have pinned many of them! One of these days, I may actually go back to the kitchen and cook (too busy looking for recipes). lol

Looking forward to making your cheesy chicken tater tot casserole. But can I use a cooked rotisserie chicken instead of chicken breast cubed? If so what would the cooking time be in a slow cooker? Thank you for all the great recipes!

Looking all over for your weekend potluck button to link back...where'd it go?

Brandie S. said...

Shiloh, we don't have a button anymore. Just a simple link in your blog post will be fine. :)

Brandie S. said...

Leon, you could but if you are using frozen tater tots then the chicken might dry out before the tater tots are done. I've never done it so really can't give you an accurate cooking time. I'm sorry!!

Thank you so much for this great site. I'm a new mom to an amazing 4 month old little girl, and recently returned to work- after being home with her :( as a kindergarten teacher, so my hands are quite full all day, and by the time I get home, I have just a few hours with her and my husband until she goes to bed, so as you can imagine- every hour of family-time is sacred :) I absolutely love all of your recipes, and have Bookmarked many of them to try over the next few weeks! We're also observant Jews, and don't eat pork/bacon, and I'm happy to be able to omit bacon from your recipes and they still taste AMAZING and are still flavorful. I made a few of these for Rosh Hashana, and wow- people were impressed! I have told all of my young-mom-friends all about you and your site! THANK YOU! :) Revi, from Northern NJ

I am so lucky to have found your site--every weekend, I spend hours going through magazines looking for easy, family friendly meals that contain common household ingredients and your site fits the bill. I want to try every single cupcake too! What a goal--a cupcake a day---maybe one a week would be a great start! Thanks for the variety too--yes I need a few go to recipes instead of the sweet treats and you have given me what I needed. Thanks so much for taking the time to do it.

This is an amazing site, I live in England (I'm English so it makes sense....lol!!), but my husband is a federal worker at RAF Lakenheath, and he is American, we have use of the Commissary so I get all my favourite American food products (I lived in the United States a while a go, so I am familiar with them)...maybe not all the wonderful regional products, but enough to get the 'flavour or America'...I am able to impress my family and friends with wonderful American meals, thanks to your wonderful site.....love the poke cakes, great for entertaining and the 'Slow cooker recipes' so easy, you just aren't afraid to push the boundries a little, whilst still making sure everything is tasty........keep up the good work...a tiny corner of England is counting on you!! Tina Weeting Norfolk!!

Brandie Skibinski said...

Tina - what a small world! We were stationed in England for 3 years and we went up to RAF Lakenheath often because the small American commissary by us did not carry much. My husband was at RAF West Ruislip (before it closed). We actually lived in Northwood and later moved to Uxbridge. But we traveled up to Lakenheath often to get some of our favorites from home since that commissary was huge and we only had a small base store at West Ruislip. I sure do miss Tesco though! So nice to hear from you. I hope you and your husband enjoy some of the yummy recipes on here. Cheers!

I really hope you love all the recipes you try from here. Thank you for leaving me such a sweet note!

Hi Brandi!
Thank you so much for all of the easy and delicious recipes using "real" food. I have been disappointed by so many cookbooks that use expensive or fancy things that my family just doesn't like or we don't want to spend the money on. We grew up eating things that Grandma made, and those are the kinds of recipes we like best :)

Anonymous said...

Oh how happy I am that I found you and your recipes! My husband is a very picky eater but your recipes are perfect. He has never turned down any of your meals!

Anonymous said...

Well, all I can say is "ditto"! I too am a school teacher with a husband and two small picky eaters! It's so refreshing to find a place where all the recipes are "like Mama used to make". With the economy the way it is, it's good to find delicious recipes that use normal, everyday ingredients that won't break the budget! Thanks so much for your time and effort! Keep them coming! I love that your recipes have the ingredients that I usually have on hand and simple to follow-- I am very fortunate that my granddaughter eats all veggies- well not brussel sprouts haven't tried those on her yet. But wanted to Thank You for rekindling my cooking spirit.....God Bless

Hi Mandy! Thank you so much! You are so sweet! I sure do appreciate you being here and hope you enjoy all the recipes you try!!

Brandie Skibinski said...

Hi Amber! I actually own 3 and all of them were Wal-Mart specials. Haaa! I am looking into possibly investing in a programmable one (like the Ninja slow cooker). But right now I own 3 sizes (2 oval and 1 round). I use them all pretty frequently. I prefer the round one for smaller meals and desserts but I use my oval ones more often. Hope that helps!

Brandie Skibinski said...

Thank you so much for that! That really means so much. To me, if a recipe has too many ingredients or hard-to-find ingredients, I'm just gonna pass it over. I just don't have time for all of that but I still want to cook up some yummy food. I'm so happy you appreciate that kind of cooking to! Thank you for being here!

I'm always telling everyone to check out your site because everything is so easy and the ingredients are crazy things you have to go to a specialty store to find. Because I like so many are doing the "New Year, New Me" thing with eating healthier, do you have any (yummy) healthier recipes you can share? Or even notes on how to make is a bit healthier? Thanks for sharing your simple recipes. I love the way you post pictures along side many of the steps of the recipe. I was looking for a specific recipe to do in the crock pot, and found it on your site. So many times, the recipes found through internet searches are not good, or worse, involve needing specific or difficult to obtain ingredients. Not yours..every recipe is made from things most people already have on hand!

Hi Brandie, I just found your website. The first day I spent a good 5 hours just reviewing your recipes and I have to say they look wonderful. I have been looking for healthy full meals that I can serve to my family, but they must be easy and quick to prepare, and you my dear have accomplished it all. I have written down many of your recipes since I am not computer savvy, and plan on doing some heavy grocery shopping in the next couple of days, which should give me one full week of your recipes, and I can't wait to try them. Also, I have passed your website on to many of my family members and friends, and all of them can't believe they haven't found you sooner. Your website is so well thought out that one day I look forward to seeing you on your own cooking show similar to Pioneer Woman. God bless you for your hard work and dedication in putting this website together.

Just perusing your site and I love the way you think and cook! I love that you buy Walmart store brand (me too!) and I loved seeing in one of your recipes that you used the parsley just for color -- "don't go out and buy parsley just for this recipe." I LOVE that pragmatism that is missing from so many cook books and blogs and I think really puts people off of cooking! Looking forward to this being one of my "go to" spots! Thank you!
