7Up Cherry Dump Cake is a simple dessert with only 3 ingredients! Cake mix, cherry pie filling and some lemon lime soda are all you need!
An Easy Classic Dessert (With A Twist)
I love desserts like this 7Up Cherry Dump Cake! It is the ultimate dump cake- everything is made in one dish, and you only need three ingredients. It doesn’t get any simpler than this. It’s a great dessert for beginners because it is truly foolproof! If you’ve made a dump cake before, you’ll know that generally the cake mix is topped with butter. This one is a little different in that it uses soda instead of the butter. It makes it a lighter (more cake-like) topping rather than a crunchier topping.

Yes, you can use strawberry, blueberry, peach or apple pie filling as a substitute for the cherry pie filling. Pretty much any pie filling will work here.

There are so many combinations that could be used. I think chocolate cake with the cherry pie filling and some Coca Cola instead of 7Up would be a nice combination. It would give a kind of Black Forest Cake vibe. But really, any combination of cake mix, pie filling, or soda can be used as you long as you think it would taste good together.
The thing about this one that is different from the butter dump cakes is that it needs time to set up after taking it out of the oven or the filling would be too runny. It thickens as it cools.

- cherry pie filling– You can use generic or name-brand for this. You can also use any pie filling flavor you would like.
- yellow cake mix– You only need the cake mix itself. No egg, water, or oil is necessary for the topping. Use whatever brand of cake mix you like or have on hand. I think this would be great with my Homemade Yellow Cake Mix too. Look for a brand of cake mix that is 15.25 ounces rather than 13.25 ounces. At the time of writing this post, Duncan Hines, Walmart Brand (Great Value) and Pillsbury are all still the larger size (15.25 ounce) but Betty Crocker has decreased its ounces to 13.25 ounces per box so I wouldn’t use Betty Crocker here.
- 7-up lemon lime soda– The lemon-lime soda creates the airy cobbler topping. You can use any brand lemon lime soda.

How To Make 7Up Cherry Dump Cake:
Preheat the oven to 350° F. Spray a 9×13-inch (2.5 quart) baking dish with nonstick spray. Add 1 1/2 cans of cherry pie filling to the bottom of the baking dish. Reserve the other half of the filling. Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the top of the pie filling for later.

Gently pour the 7-up evenly over the top of the cake mix. Use the back of a spoon to gently incorporate the cake mix and 7-up until it is no longer bubbly and there aren’t any dry bits. You aren’t fully mixing it. Just swirl the back of the spoon around to make sure all of the cake mix is covered with the 7Up.

Dollop the remaining cherry pie filling on top. Bake on the middle rack for about 60 minutes or until golden brown. After 45 minutes, if the top is getting too brown, cover with aluminum foil.

NOTE: Oven times can vary so please go by doneness and not strictly by time. Allow the cake to cool so the cobbler sets completely. If you cut into it while it is hot, it will be very liquidy. As it cools, it sets up. This can take at least 2 hours so this is a great dessert to make the day before you want to enjoy it.

Instructions

Hi. I would like to add some white chocolate chips. Your recipe says a layer can be added over the cherry filling. Would that be over the bottom layer?
I would probably sprinkle them on top of that bottom layer of cherry pie filling before putting the cake mix on top. Don’t use too many or they may not all melt. It will make it very sweet so just keep that in mind 🙂
