In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups apple cider, ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 star anise (if using), ½ teaspoon whole cloves and ¼ teaspoon allspice.
Bring the mixture up to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Once the mixture comes to a boil, turn the heat down to low and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes.
Use a mesh strainer to remove the spices from the cider.
Pour 6 ounces vodka into the cider and stir to combine. Serve warm.
Notes
If you've never had star anise before, it has a light licorice flavor (which I know people love or hate) so if that isn't your thing, then definitely leave it out.
Double this batch to make more to serve more people.
Use your favorite vodka, tequila and whiskey can also be used.
Apple juice can be substituted if you cannot find apple cider.
This can be kept warm in a 2-3 quart round slow cooker for guests to serve themselves.
