This Guinness Chocolate Buttercream Frosting is a smooth, rich, delicious frosting that has the perfect chocolate flavor and just a hint of Guinness, perfect to frost all the things.
In a medium microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips. Once they have completely melted, stir the chips well, so the entire mixture is smooth and creamy. Set the bowl aside to let the chocolate slightly cool.
While the chocolate is resting, in another medium bowl with hand mixer or in bowl of stand mixer, beat the butter and vanilla until it becomes soft.
Add in the milk and Guinness and mix until all of the ingredients are well combined.
Mix in the cooled melted chocolate and allow them to mix completely before adding in the powdered sugar.
Mix on medium until all ingredients are well blended, scraping the sides of the bowl with the spatula as needed to incorporate the powdered sugar.
Notes
Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature (not melted.) Be sure to mix the butter until light and fluffy before adding in any other ingredients, this helps everything combine better with out lumps.
This frosting is very smooth and creamy but holds its shape when piping as well.
If you plan on piping right away, allow the frosting to cool slightly in the refrigerator before piping.
Not a fan of Guinness? You can use milk or cream in replacement of that.
We use semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe, I feel like it matches the flavor of the Guinness the best, but you can use milk chocolate in a pinch.
Make sure to let the chocolate cool before adding it to the butter mixture or it will make everything too warm.
I microwave the chocolate chips until smooth, but you can also use a double boiler to ensure it won't seize up.
