Ham and cheese gets a fun twist with this Ham and Cheese Stromboli! An easy recipe that only requires a handful of ingredients and is perfect for leftover ham!
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside.
Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured, clean work surface into a rough 8x12 rectangle. Place the dough on the cookie sheet.
In a small bowl, mix together the parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Sprinkle half of this mixture all over the dough.
Add half of the cheese over the dough, leaving a half-inch border. Make sure one side of the dough has a larger, 1 and ½ inch border of just dough.
Lay the ham over the cheese. Top the ham with the remaining cheese.
In a small bowl, beat the egg with a splash of water. Brush the egg wash over the exposed edges of the pizza dough.
Roll jelly-roll style, from one long end to another. Make sure to roll tightly into a log. You will end on the side with the egg wash, and pinch the seam together to secure the roll. Pinch the top of bottom edges together and tuck them under the roll.
Brush the top all over with the egg wash. Sprinkle on the remaining seasoning mix. Cut slits 2 inches apart into the dough on top so excess air can escape while baking.
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Let rest for 10 minutes, then cut the stromboli into 2-inch slices. Don't skip this. The dough will continue to bake while it is resting.
Serve with honey mustard for dipping, optional.
Notes
Oven times vary since many ovens have hot spots and cold spots. Make sure after you preheat the oven that you let it stay at that heat for at least 10 minutes before adding your Stromboli. Most ovens are not actually at the correct temperature even though the oven will beep that it is ready. If you get an oven thermometer, you will see this is the case even with brand new ovens.
It is best to bake on the middle oven rack. The dough does need to rest after baking. It will continue to cook as it is resting on the warm baking pan. So if you cut into it right away and it still seems like it is not fully baked, this is why. Don't skip this step. Also, if you did not roll your dough out thin enough or evenly, it will not bake evenly.
