Whopper Cake (Malted Milk Ball Cake)

Whopper Cake (aka Malted Milk Ball Cake) is a moist, dressed up chocolate cake mix that is topped with a malted whipped topping.

A DELICIOUSLY EASY CHOCOLATE CAKE

This is Whopper, as in malted milk balls, not the grilled kind found at Burger King. That would be a bit weird, wouldn’t it? If you love the flavor of Whoppers, then you will really enjoy this cake. I think malted milk is an underused ingredient. I mean, back in the day, you couldn’t go into any self-respecting soda shoppe or ice cream shop without seeing the words “Malt” somewhere on the menu.

MALTED MILK BALLS

We love to make Chocolate Malts at home these days. Fortunately, we also have a couple of good shops near us that still make the old-fashioned malts. You can also add malted milk powder to chocolate chip cookies for an incredible flavor. This cake is not only easy but it is given a boost of flavor from good ole malted milk that gives it that yummy and unique taste.

  1. What a lovely recipe – had to read the comments to discover what a Whopper was (Malteasers to us British cooks), but recipe looks great. As I work for a professional catering company I'm always on the lookout for recipes to try with our catering equipment.

  2. This looks fabulous and am definitely going to try it! I'm a Brit living in the USA and have just discovered Whoppers last week… unless you're a true connoisseur you cannot tell the difference between them and Maltesers (which I have missed desperately since leaving the UK)! In fact, I was so delighted to discover them, I posted a no-bake Whoppers cake recipe on my blog to mark the occasion! I live in a house with 4 Star Wars obsessed boys and so I named mine a Darth Maul-teser cake!
    Thanks for the great recipe!

  3. That looks so amazing! I cannot wait to make this. My daughter will love it! We are celebrating our first anniversary today and we have our first give away. Come over check it out.

  4. Bran, my Mom (and me of course) would go CRAZY for this cake! She love love loves whoppers! They are definitely her favorite candy. I am printing this recipe for her fo sho!

  5. Oh, I love Whoppers!!! Brandie, I'm a little scared to have this delicious cake in my house…I have a feeling I'd be sampling sliver after sliver till it completely disappeared! YUM.

  6. I heart Whoppers. (And not the b.k. kind either.)My youngest son would absolutely LOVE this cake. He's a whopper fan too. 🙂

  7. Can't wait to try this – maybe for my son's 16th birthday. I made the glazed pumpkin bread, FYI, and it was so moist and amazing! Keep those recipes comin'!

  8. Brandie, this looks whopping incredible. Love the flavour of malt – reminds me of when I was little, my Dad used to buy malt extract and we had a spoonful before going to school in freezing Scotland in the winter. This sounds so wonderful and good to know you could use Maltesers instead. Wonder if I could just use malt extract? 🙂
    Love it!

  9. I am so glad you posted this. For some reason I have 2 packages of malt and was wondering how I can use up some of it. Great tip on adding it to cookies and love that it is used in this cake recipe. I could really go for a visit to a retro malt shop-but until I find one, I will be happy with your recipe! Great post.

  10. Well look at you Brandie! What a great idea! I haven't had a whopper in forever…I feel like this cake needs to be made so I can amend that problem haha

  11. Brandi, this cake is for me–I have always loved Whoppers!!! Also, there's an awesome old fashioned drive-in back home that has the very best burgers with chocolate and vanilla malts! 🙂
I'm so glad you posted this recipe.
    Blessings, Leslie

  12. Honestly, I didn't even know that malted milk was a "thing" or something you could buy. Well I guess you learn something new every day! I do love whoppers though and that cake looks delicious!

  13. Love the Whoppers in this cake. When I was growing up, we went to the "drugstore" with a fountain that had chocolate malts, which were the best. I will make this cake for my Bunco group, that love the Whoppers and chocolate malts.

  14. Thank you for the trip down memory lane Brandie! In high school, I worked in an ice cream shop where malted confections enjoyed versatility across the menu. You're right, the ingredient nearly seems overlooked these days. Another terrific recipe my friend.

  15. Warwickshire! Oh you lucky duck! So beautiful there. We used to go the orchestra concerts and firework show every summer at Warwick castle (not sure if they still do it). I loved it there. We lived outside of London in Uxbridge. We would love to come back and visit soon!
The main ingredient in this really is the powdered chocolate malt, so as long as you can find that, the Maltesers would taste great on top of this.
Jill, not sure about the malt extract. I think it could work but it would need to be a chocolate malt – not vanilla. Are you able to find that in France? (so good to hear from you!!)

  16. We don't have maltesers here but I lived in the UK for three years so I know what you are referring too. They are VERY similar to maltesers. They don't have quite the same texture in the center but I would say they are very close in taste! What part of the UK do you live in?

  17. Are you referring to the ones from Burger King? They are big grilled hamburgers with lettuce, tomato and onion. The ones I'm using are chocolate malted milk balls. 🙂

  18. Ohmygoodness!!!! I can't wait to try this one! I adore malt!! My son's 19th birthday is on Wednesday so I think I'll make this for him! When he was just a little tyke …. maybe 3 or 4 years old, he kept telling his dad and I that he wanted some "burger candy". We couldn't figure for the life of us what he was asking for. Finally we took him to our local store to pick some out and he got so excited when he saw the Whoppers. I guess he associated it with the burger place. LOL! What a happy memory this will bring back to make him this cake for his birthday! Thank you. 🙂
