So, y’all know if you follow me on social media (I post more often in Instagram) that I am that crazy cat lady. We have four (Lulu, Goober, Cheddar & Biscuit.) I grew up with cats and I’ve always been a cat Momma. I love them because they are stubborn. I love them because they make you feel like you gotta earn their respect. And I love their individual personalities. Lulu (shown above & below) is my worry wart. Her face is so expressive that I love to snap pictures of her. Her expressions make for the best memes! Ha! Lulu is not your typical sleep-all-day kitty. She is always active and very aware of her surroundings. I think she would have been an awesome barn cat, to be honest. But she is definitely what I would call high-strung. If there are any changes in the house, (like moving the furniture) she gets stressed. Or, when we rescued a kitten a few months ago and brought the new kitty into the house, it stressed her out.
Goober is the kitten we rescued a few months ago. My parents found her trying to hide in the engine of their car. It was cold and it was winter and animals want to go where it is warm. My parents (being the crazy cat people they are too) worked for a couple of days to get her out. They couldn’t drive their car but were finally successful after she started to trust them. Well, we fell in love with her and decided she should be a part of our family.
So, when Goober came into our home, it put Lulu on high alert. Her nerves were shot and she didn’t like this little fur ball who kept playing with her tail. So our vet told us to try a FELIWAY® Multicat diffuser to see if could naturally help her to calm down and that it might help all of our cats through the adjustment.
Here’s why it’s neat:
- FELIWAY® Multicat mimics the natural feline appeasing pheromone which encourages social bonding and comforts and calms cats.
- FELIWAY® Multicat can help all cats living under one roof feel more safe and secure with their surroundings and ease animosity.
- It’s easy and it worked for us! We plugged in the diffuser and let it do its thing. One diffuser can last for 30 days and you want to put it in whatever room your cat(s) hang out the most. So we put one upstairs and one downstairs in the main living areas. It took a couple of days and we had a much calmer kitty household!
FELIWAY ® CLASSIC is a diffuser for single cat homes too! Here’s what I love: FELIWAY® is not a drug. It mimics a naturally occurring cat pheromone.
This is Biscuit. She is always chill. Nothing ruffles her feathers. However, she has taken to just standing by the diffuser. It’s hilarious. I guess it’s her own personal kitty spa. You do you, Biscuit.
Cheddar is our only boy cat. He is totally devoted to my husband and son. He adores them and they adore him. But Cheddar reacted differently to Goober coming into our home. I had taught him early on how to use the scratching post. We rescued him when he was already a few years old and so he had never been trained to use a scratching post. But over time, he reacted positively to my training.

Although Cheddar took to Goober right away, (he became like a Daddy to her) he started reverting to some old habits. He began scratching the couch and chairs and rugs. It got so bad we had to put clear tape on the edges of everything to keep him from scratching. But it looked awful!
So, we took a 3-prong approach to help all of our kitties. We plugged in our FELIWAY® Multicat diffuser and we used a couple of other FELIWAY® products in conjunction with the diffuser. We used FELIWAY® CLASSIC spray and FELISCRATCH® by FELIWAY®.
Spray it all over
Hiding, scratching and urine-spraying are stress-related behaviors. The FELIWAY® CLASSIC spray works similarly to the diffuser. Again, it’s not a drug and mimics the naturally occurring feline facial pheromone. You can use it at home or on the go. We sprayed it on Cheddar’s bedding, his cat tower and even onto the furniture.
We also found it was helpful to spray it into their carriers before vet visits. It’s clinically proven to help reduce urine spray in 9 out of 10 cats within 1 month and helps reduce scratching in 8 out of 10 cats in as little as 7 days. I know there are studies and graph charts that explain it all better than me – but the bottom line is – it worked for our Cheddar.
De-stress your pet
The third product we used in our approach to help de-stress the kitties is the FELISCRATCH® by FELIWAY®. This is a product that you put directly on where you want your kitties to scratch. It’s super important that you give your cats a scratching post or something similar that is safe for them to scratch. It’s a natural cat behavior and they need to do it.
Stop unwanted kitty behavior
With FELISCRATCH®, you put the liquid directly onto the scratching post. We just drizzled it all over the scratching post. It has a non-toxic blue stain in it so kitties will take some visual interest as well.
It is recommended that you do this while your scratching post is laying flat with newspaper underneath or over the sink so you don’t stain anything that you don’t want to stained. Just let it dry for 5 minutes after applying.
Each application of the FELISCRATCH® lasts up to 4 weeks (9 pipettes come in a bag.) If you follow the procedure on the package, your kitty should be trained by the time you’ve finished the package. Like all the other FELIWAY® products, the FELISCRATCH®, contains a synthetic copy of the natural pheromone that cats leave on places they scratch and encourages them to scratch there again. It also contains a small bit of catnip. All I know is it worked! We usually have to purchase new scratching post every 6 months because 4 cats can tear up a scratching post very quickly. This is a great product to put on your new posts to encourage them to begin using it immediately.
