Bubble Up Pizza (+Video)

Bubble Up Pizza is a refrigerated biscuit casserole that uses pizza sauce, sausage, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni to make an easy dinner!

A FUN AND EASY DINNER

So, first let me say, I originally had no intentions of posting this recipe. Mainly because I thought most folks had heard of it or were already making it. So, I didn’t expect it when I got an overwhelming response after posting the Bubble Up Lasagna recipe last week. Everyone wanted the Pizza version – so here it is. I hope you love it!

TIPS FOR MAKING BUPPLE UP PIZZA:

  • Get creative with this! Add in any toppings that your family enjoys! Green peppers, onions and mushrooms are all great add-ins.
  • If you don’t like the sausage, no problem, just leave it out of the recipe.
  • Use ground beef or ground turkey instead of ground sausage.
  • If your family loves a lot of sauce, you can add in another jar to this. This is so easy to really make the way your family will enjoy!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • Italian sausage – you can use hot or mild sausage or you can even use ground beef if you prefer.
  • pizza sauce – you can use store-bought if you want to go all out and make homemade pizza sauce then go for it! I like Furmano’s (pictured below) when I can find it and Prego makes a good pizza sauce too.
  • Pillsbury Grands Jr. Biscuits – you want the smaller biscuits not the larger Grands biscuits – it will usually be about 10 biscuits per tube.
  • mozzarella cheese – I like the mozzarella that has a bit of cream cheese in it – I think it melts better but again use what you like here. You can even have fun and add some different cheese to the mix – pepper jack would give it a nice kick of heat!
  • pepperoni slices – you don’t have to just top with pepperoni, you can top with any of your favorite pizza toppings – have fun with it!

HOW TO MAKE BUBBLE UP PIZZA:

Preheat oven to 375F degrees. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. If you are not using the pre-cooked sausage, you’re going to need to brown and crumble the Italian sausage and drain any excess grease.

Cut each biscuit into eighths. Most recipes for this call for cutting these into quarters and we just find that size to be too big so we like them a bit more bite-sized. Note: This is also a good teaching lesson for the kiddos. A fun way to introduce fractions.

In a bowl, combine pizza sauce with cut-up biscuits and cooked sausage. Stir to combine.

Then top with shredded cheese and sliced pepperoni. Little hands love to help with this job!

I like to sprinkle the top with some dried parsley. It doesn’t affect the flavor at all but it’s something I do because I think it makes it look pretty. But if you don’t already have some in your pantry, then don’t go out and buy it just for this.

Bake uncovered for about 25-30 minutes until biscuits are cooked through. It is closer to the thirty minute mark in my oven.

 Then serve. This is great served with a salad.

Notes

  • If you can’t find the 12 ounce can of biscuits, just purchase two of the smaller (6 ounce) cans of biscuits.
  • Serve with a crisp, green salad. Add in any toppings that your family enjoys: green peppers, onions and mushrooms are all great add-ins.

  1. A sprinkle of Italian seasoning sounds more in keeping with the recipe than parsley. I am not overly crazy about biscuits. Do you think the thawed frozen yeast rolls would work like this, allowing for rise time?

  3. This sounds like a great quick recipe, you could add other ingredients (mushrooms) etc and pretty much make it any way you like. The results would be good, like recipes that are easy, quick that I can mess with without ruining them.

      Yes !!! I made ahead and put in refrigerator…. just baked it about 10 extra minutes (keeping an eye on it) and it was perfect!

    Saw a recipe just like this-but it had weird size tubes of biscuits and everything was layered instead of mixed together.

  12. Maybe this is another one of those dishes that you think everyone knows, but it's more regional? I've never heard of bubble up pizza or bubble up lasagna before, I'm going to give one (or both!) a try soon, thanks for the recipes!

  13. This is the Best Pizza I've had in a very long time, and so very easy to do. And to top this it's probably cheaper then going out to buy a regular Pizza. Healthier Too. The only thing I may add to it is some pineapple (crushed) with the pepperoni. But again so much better . Thanks Again
