A SIMPLE, DELICIOUS HONEY GRANOLA RECIPE

Recently I decided to try my hand at making my own homemade honey granola. I wanted to have a good, basic (but flavorful) granola recipe that I could sprinkle on yogurt, eat by itself or eat as a cereal. So I knew I didn’t want it to be super hard or overly-crunchy. But I did want it to cluster together so I could eat it by itself and easily pick it up to eat. After a bit of trial and error, I have found the way to make the best Homemade Granola!

TIPS FOR MAKING HOMEMADE GRANOLA:

  • The main thing I learned is granola is crazy-easy to make. And it’s so easy to tailor to your tastes. You could take this basic recipe and add any seasonal flavors you like (such as Apple Pie spice for the fall), or any dried fruits and nuts you might enjoy.
  • It makes for a great homemade gift. I actually made up a few jars of this for my son’s teachers and his bus driver for Back-to-School gifts.
  • Granola is wonderful to eat on the go. Just pop some in a baggie for you or the kiddos and it is an easy snack to always have on hand and it lasts a while as long as you keep it in an airtight container. Put a ziploc bag of it in your car and if you forgot to eat breakfast that morning, you at least have a filling snack to hold you over until lunch.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)

  • old-fashioned oats
  • all-purpose flour
  • light brown sugar
  • almond slices
  • ground cinnamon
  • ground nutmeg
  • salted butter
  • honey (or pure maple syrup)
  • peanut butter (optional)
  • vanilla extract

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE GRANOLA:

Preheat oven to 250F degrees. Spray baking pan with nonstick cooking spray or line with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, almonds, cinnamon & nutmeg. Stir well, making sure you break up any chunks of brown sugar.

Bake for about 65-75 minutes (oven times vary so keep an eye on it). When it’s finished, take pan out of oven and give it all a good stir. I’ll actually stir it a few times while it is cooking. Note: Granola mixture will be soft set when you first take it out. But will start to harden up slightly as it cools.

If you’re using any dried fruits like raisins, etc., add them in at this point and then allow it to cool. Once it’s cool, you’ll need to go through and break it up into little clusters.

Be sure to store in airtight containers. Mason Jars also work well for storing this and make it a great way to give as a gift as well. Put it on some yogurt or even eat it as a cereal too!

So yummy!!!! I cut back a little on the flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg because I don’t like strong spices. I then added walnuts & sunflower seeds to the dry ingredients. It turned out Perfect!! I split the recipe into 2 containers and added Craisens to one and dark choc chips to the other.

I made a batch tonight – it's delicious! I kept 1/3 of the batch plain for our oldest son, and added 1/3 cup each of dried cranberries, raisins and coconut to the other 2/3. DS2 already had some on his cereal, and both boys will take some in their lunches tomorrow on yogurt – will definitely be making this again – it's really simple! I like anonymous's idea of using banana chips – they'd be yummy in this!

This is so simple and so delicious! I've tried this a couple of times, once using maple syrup and pecans and another time making it as directed. Perfect either way! Very forgiving, easy to double too. Thanks Brandie! Keep 'em coming!
