True Fact #1:
I love to watch QVC. Not HSN or those other shopping channels. Just QVC. I don't know why. Something about the QVC and their land of happy makes me want to go there. I love to watch them sell me stuff. That guy David and the chic that sells the Irish stuff, I want them to be my neighbors.
True Fact #2:
I've never actually bought anything from QVC.
True Fact #3:
I love to watch Top Gear (the BBC and American versions). I want to be a guest on the show just so I can drive their little test car around the track. But it better not be a manual, because I grind gears too bad. But I would love to just be able to rip it up on the track and pretend I was the Stig, just once.
True Fact #4:
I'm a crap driver. I'm one of those curb-hopping, blind-spotting, always near a yellow light praying the cop doesn't see as it turns red kind of drivers (except when my son is in the car and then it's like driving Miss Daisy). But I am wicked good at parallel parking.
True Fact #5:
I like to suck the salt off of salted peanut shells before cracking it open to eat the peanuts. This grosses some people out. But I say, why put the salt on the outside if isn't meant to be enjoyed before eating the actual peanuts?
So what does this have to do with today's post? Well, nothing really. I just thought I'd throw some random facts about me out there so we can all get to know each other a little better.
Now, on to some tips that are actually useful!
I was fortunate to receive some books from Gooseberry Patch that are chock full of useful tips for in the kitchen and to create a cozy home!
I love the fact that these books are tiny and they have some really amazing and useful tips. I think these would be an absolutely fantastic gift to someone who is new to cooking or to a couple who have just moved into their first home. Heck, they'd even be great for that person who is always so hard to buy for! There were so many neat tips and tricks in here that I had never heard of.
One of my favorites came from the Tiny Tips for the Kitchen book and it is for Homemade Carpet Freshener. And you won't believe how easy it mixes up and you can tailor the smell however you want or make it fragrance free. I enjoy making homemade cleaning solutions sometimes. My Mom has a fantastic recipe for Homemade Window Cleaner, if you want to give that a look-see.

And you won't believe how easy it mixes up and you can tailor the smell however you want or make it fragrance free. I enjoy making homemade cleaning solutions sometimes. My Mom has a fantastic recipe for Homemade Window Cleaner, if you want to give that a look-see.
Ingredients:
1 cup Baking Soda
1 cup Corn Starch
30 drops of your favorite essential oil
{I found this oil at Walmart in the smelly-good candle section}
{I found this oil at Walmart in the smelly-good candle section}
Directions:
Combine all ingredients together and allow to dry.
Shake freshener onto rungs, allow to sit for 30 minutes and then vacuum. For flea problems, add 30 drops of oil of rosemary or oil of pennyroyal and brush into carpet (Be sure to test a small area of your carpet first).
Notes: You can store this in any type of lidded container.
I used my ole stand by, my mason jars. I just poked some holes in the top using a drill bit and a hammer.
Just make sure you make your holes large enough so the powder can come out. The first time I did this, I poked the holes too small and the powder barely trickled out.
Enjoy!

To clean the coffee or tea stains out of your coffee cups, put a drop or two of liquid dishwasher soap in the cup and fill the cup to the rim with hot water and let sit. The stains will clean right out!!
ReplyDeleteOh not sure if you need my email address or not with my comment but I forgot it so here is is: vwmazlady@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI plan to make some of the carpet freshener!
Since we have so much dog hair all the time all over our wood floors. A quick pick up for me is to use a dryer sheet to pick it up quickly...ciao4now64@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI love to make my own household cleaner out of a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar with enough drops of essential oils to make it smell nice. It works on surfaces, hardwood or laminate floors and even for cleaning my leather sofa!!
ReplyDeleteWhere can I get the essential oil for the carpet freshener recipe?
ReplyDeleteI use Listerine in a spray bottle to keep bugs away from our back door. Mostly the ones that you get when you turn on the back porch at night. Ljbenz2003@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI can give you a tip regarding cornstarch....when putting cornstarch in something (because you don't have enough of the gravy mix you need & you're trying to "make do") & you need about 3/4 to 1 cup....make sure it's cornstarch & not baking soda (in your Tupperware containers that the stickers fell off of) Oh well, it was almost 25 years before I made something for supper that was completely inedible ;)
ReplyDeleteOh & I made some homemade laundry soap last week that is doing quite well....but, we're not eating it
Great tip, I'm totally trying this!
ReplyDeleteAlso, as for your peanuts, I eat the peanut with the shell, and I KNOW that grosses people out. Mmmm, yumm.
Hi Brandie, love these kinds of little tips!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHere's a couple of random little facts about me since you threw some out there:
1. I LOVE the show House Hunters on HGTV even though I've never bought a house in my life. LOL
2. I'm obsessed with linens! I think it's hereditary though because my mom and sister are too. (At least that's the excuse I use)
3. I'm horrible at crafts. I see something done, think it looks easy and decide to try it... and it ends up looking like a 1st grader made it! UGH! :)
Thanks for the contest. My email is stebcol@hotmail.com
Fun giveaway, Brandie! One of my favorite tips is to tear fabric softener sheets in half for the dryer. Half a sheet works just as well as a whole sheet and you get more for your money!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to have both of these books. I am always looking for new tricks and money saving ones at that. My most recent discovery is blotting the same fragrance oilyou used in your carpet freshener ( that I got at Walmart) on my ceiling fan blades to refresh the house quickly and it smells Fantastic !!

I use old dryer sheets to dust the fronts of the TV's, it helps repel the dust, and keeps them cleaner much longer! Love the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhat a generous giveaway Brandie. Anything that makes running the home/kitchen easier is a plus for me. To extend the life of our hand soap we mix it with water. Easier on the budget with these tips.
ReplyDeleteMy name is kim and I use dryer sheets to clean soap scum from my shower doors and bath tub. we have hard water also and it does get rid of some of the hard water stains.
ReplyDeleteI use WD-40 to clean my stainless steel appliances. It doesn't streak like a lot of the expensive cleaners recommended for SS appliances. It's very inexpensive and a little goes a long way :)
ReplyDeleteI love those Gooseberry patch books! About the only original idea I ever came up with was for taming the clutter of shoes at the front door by adding a big pretty wicker basket for everyone to toss their tennies into. makes morning less crazy and the floor from being taken over! I'm a neat freak, so this helps me a lot...
ReplyDeleteI don't have any really good tips, but I DO have the QVC recipe app (featuring David) for my iPhone. I watch QVC a lot, too, but I have a very good friend who's a producer and I know others who work there as well (I even met David at a picnic once...about 15 years ago!). He would be an awesome neighbor! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love grinding orange peel in the food disposal to clean and freshen it!!
ReplyDeleteI've been sticking newspapers in my tupperware to keep the smell out! Works very well.
ReplyDeleteGiveaway on my blog, today, too!
www.knewlywifed.blogspot.com
I put shallow pans filled with 20 Mule Team Borax in my basement to keep spiders away. It REALLY works!
ReplyDeleteI also like to use white vinegar, 1 drop of Dawn dish soap and hot water to wash my windows. My, how they sparkle!
Thanks for a fun blog!
I put fabric softener sheets on my linen closet shelves.
ReplyDeleteFor someone who doesn't have access to a drill to ready the jar tops, might I suggest saving your Parmesan cheese container for purposes such as this. They come in handy for all sorts! Perfect for sprinkling dry ingredients.
ReplyDeleteI use half a lemon sprinkled with salt to scrub my wood cutting board. It removes stains and odors very well.
ReplyDeleteThank you for entering me in the contest!

ReplyDeleteAmanda nanny_yaya81@yahoo.com
I don't really have a tip but I would love to learn some!!!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite tips((and it really works!)) is unwrapping a piece of juicy fruit gum and putting on each shelf of the pantry to keep any kind of creepy crawlies that invade flour based products....has to be refreshed every couple of months, but I have been doing it for years and it really works! AWESOME giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI make my own lotions....they are wonderful and go such a long ways. I also make a lot of my own seasong blends like taco, fajita, chili, and I have the absolute best salt substitute recipe. I would love to win this giveaway!
ReplyDeleterhondaree1958@yahoo.com
Hi Brandie! We really ARE birds of a feather...I LOVE this kinda stuff. I appreciate your tips and recipes for homemade cleaners. I love to put some lemon juice in a cup of water - set it in the microwave for about 5 minutes on high...let it steam up for a few minutes, then easilly wipe out the splatters. Microwave smells fresher too. I'd love to win one of these cool little books. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! The store bought carpet fresheners are too perfumy for my husband. I will have to try this. Amy - amylynngleason@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi Love all these tips, and would love the books! I am most definitely trying the juicy fruit one (that's one I never heard before) My tips is if you ever get those pesky gnats around fruit in your kitchen like bananas you're letting get really ripe for banana nut bread put a little apple cider vinegar with a couple drops of dish liquid soap in it near where they are congregating. They will be lured by the smell of the vinegar and killed by the dish soap! I use a little shot glass, but I suppose a saucer of this would work just as well. email weokakim@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteWould really love these books! My tip: plastic containers (including Tupperware) that have a tomato-y smell or stain are fresh after filling with hot water and a couple of tablespoons of baking soda. Let soak, rinse and should be clean and fresh. If stain is still there, use a paste of baking soda/water and rub on the stain. Rinse and wash thoroughly. Baking soda does wonders!

I don't really have a whole lot of tips, but here is one. I save my orange peels and put them in a jar in the fridge (just to keep mold from taking over.) When the jar is full of peels, I add white vinegar to cover, and let it set in a cool dark place for 3-4 weeks. You get a really good cleanser, as the limonene (spelling?) in the orange peels is a great degreaser. Put in a spray bottle and it is good for those messy kitchen jobs.
ReplyDeleteI take my favorite dryer sheet and place one in each of my pillow cases. When I go to bed, I am soothed by the scent and sleep much better.
ReplyDeletePopping in to say hi! :-) Thanks for such a great giveaway...love gooseberry patch! <3

Hi, my tip is really pretty simple. When you drop a raw egg and it breaks all over the floor, pour salt over the egg, enough to cover the egg. Let it set for a while till all the moisture is sucked up by the salt. Then just pick it up with a paper towel.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of corn startch...when my boys were babies I used to put corn startch in powedered sugar shakers as use when changing their diapers. I'd first smear their little bums with vaseline as a barrier then sprinkle on the cornstarch on top. CHEAP & scout's honor that none of my 4 boys ever got a rash (& I used cloth diapers :)

I adore the gooseberry patch books. wonderful ideas.
ReplyDeleteMy fav tip is for the oily/greasy stains on clothes, use a drop or two of clear or yellow Dawn dishwashing soap (Don't use the blue kind, it may stain the clothing) on the spots. Rub into stain with your fingernail or a soft toothbrush, wash as normal. Spots should be gone. I've used this on tomato based stains & cooking oil stains with great results.

I have always used Windex as a carpet spot remover...anytime a spill was made on any of my carpet I would immediately clean it up as best I could then go over the spot with Windex (spray it, scrub it with a Scrubbie Sponge, then blot it well with paper towels or a hand towel to be sure and soak up all the moisture), no more spots and no place for the dirt to stick to! BTW I raised 2 boys and ran a day care in my home for over 5 years! Carpets always looked new...
ReplyDeleteI use dryer sheets in my son's cleats, especially when we are traveling for games and they have to stay in the same room for me. When I do use them in the dryer I tear them in half, they work just as well and double the boxes life.
ReplyDeleteOOPS! Almost forgot...kdolady@yahoo.com

Hi youll, here in texas we have problems with "love" bugs on the front of the car when they start flying around a couple times a year. The only way i have found to get them off of the car without messing up the paint is to wash the car with a wet dryer sheet. I get the cheap ones from the dollar Store. Hope that helps someone! Bye now, youll come back, ya hear.

ReplyDeleteWe save all of our eggshells (rinsed out) for our worm composter and garden. I crush them up good in a processor and store them in jars until we need them. The shells get mixed in with the soil outside. And I have heard that the shells are beneficial to worm breeding, plus it helps with aeration in the composter.

ReplyDeleteFor people who use dryer sheets in their dryers: Take the filter out of your dryer and pour water in it. If it holds water, wash it out with dish soap. Dryer sheets have a wzxy substance in them that will clog the filter and can cause fires.
ReplyDeleteI would love the win the tiny tips books.
A favorite kitchen tip that my mother taught me is when measuring shortening use a measuring cup larger than the portion needed. If you need to measure 1/3 cup, use a 1 cup measure add 2/3 cup COLD water and then add shortening until water fills the cup. You don't have to worry about air pockets leading to inaccurate measuring.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win the gooseberry patch new tips books. e-mail is sandrardcde@aol.com Thanks
My favorite kitchen tip is to keep a small bottle of bleach in the kitchen. I keep my dishcloths smelling clean and sanitized by putting a tiny bit of bleach in my dish water. I also use this to wipe off counters before rolling out biscuits or pie dough (be sure and dry the counter before using, tho). Of course, you want to wear gloves when using this bleach water.
