Easy Apple Dumplins

It's that time of year again- FALL! And that means apple season.   There are just so many great ways to use apples and my brain just starts buzzing with all the possibilities.  One of the first recipes that always comes to mind are these dumplins. Yes, I know it should be spelled with a "g" on the end but I always pronounce it as dumplins.  So we're going with dumplins.  This recipe is just so easy and you only need one apple for 4 servings or two apples for 8 servings.  And the crescent rolls take on a whole nutha flavor when combined with the cinnamon and butter. My husband just loves this because he loves apple desserts and I love it because it is easy peasy!
 Ingredients:
1 Green Apple (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious)
1 tube (8 oz.) Crescent Rolls
1 stick unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ground Cinnamon (to taste)
1/2 cup lemon lime soda (Sprite or Mountain Dew work good)
(Vanilla extract not pictured)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350F degrees
Peel and core apples. Cut apple into 8 slices.
Unroll tube of crescent rolls and separate into 8 pieces.
 On each roll, sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon.
 Add one apple slice.
 Roll it up in a nice little bundle. Continue with next 7 rolls the same way.
Spray an 8-inch square pan with nonstick spray.
Place all 8 dumplins into baking dish.
 Mix together melted butter with sugar and vanilla.
Pour butter mixture on top of crescent rolls.
Now take soda and pour it around the edges of the crescent rolls.
Sprinkle tops with a bit more cinnamon.
Bake in preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes.
Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
Cook's Notes: Just double the recipe and use a 9x13 pan for 8 servings. Also, if you haven't given this cinnamon a try, you really should if you get a chance. It goes by many names but it is cinnamon from Vietnam. It is sometimes called Vietnamese Cinnamon or Saigon Cinnamon. You can probably find it your major grocery store chains now. I found this at Walmart. It has such a great concentrated cinnamon flavor and I am hooked on it now.   I just love to use it to make homemade applesauce. It really makes a big difference in taste.

Just tried these and love them! I agree about the kind of cinnamon and just so you know, our local Costco carries a huge bottle of it so incredibly cheap compared to what you can buy in the grocery store and it lasts forever.

These look amazing! One question....I know they're probably best warm, right out of the oven, but how about when they come to room temperature? I was thinking of making these for a spaghetti dinner at my daughter's school.

These tast just fine at room temperature. In fact, my husband always asks me to make extra so he can take some for lunch the next day. So he's usually eating them cold since they stay in his cooler. To me, they are best warm but he seems to enjoy the taste either way! :)

If your scared of sweet stay away from these. Oh my goodness these are sooooo good. I have taken these to a church supper and none returned home. lol I also baked some last night and had with ice cream. Yum!! Super easy and super tasty. You will never go wrong making this dessert! lol

I made these last Sunday! And, I made 24 of them. I used the cinnamon sugar instead of plain cinnamon and also apples from Mother-in-laws tree. I added about 2 teaspoons of regular cinnamon to the sugar/butter mixture and instead of sprite, I used 7-up! My-my, they were ooohhh, so good!

But when I saw your Easy Apple Dumplings I knew I had to try it! But we don't get Crescent Rolls here...is there anything I can replace it with?

I'm just not that familiar with other products from different countries. I guess maybe you could make them from scratch but then they wouldn't be called Easy Apple Dumplings. And I honestly don't have a from-scratch recipe for crescent rolls. I'm so sorry!

I use this recipe for gatherings all of the time... with one smal change.. try using Code Red Mountain Dew instead of the sprite... it gives it a kick of cherry flavor...I also add cherries at Christmas.. just to make it look a little more like Christmas. Blessings

Every Sunday, my son and I watch "Once Upon A Time"...Every Sunday, I make an apple dish for us to eat during the show...Being that the main character is Snow White and..well..you remember the story...

I came across this recipe because, quite frankly, I stalk Brandie's page daily. She's directly responsible for getting all these kids of mine fed on a weekly basis...but anyway..

If the smell is any indication, we're going to LOVE these!

Just one dumb question, though...What is the significance of the Sprite in the recipe?

I made these dumplins late this morning for lunch. I care-take my parents (85 & 86 yrs. old) and it's not easy to come up with something interesting day-in & day-out. My Mom, Dad & son said it's the best they've ever had! My Mom said, "Send this page link to my sisters, daughter & grandkids; it's that much of a keeper"!

My Dad took care of my Mom until early 2012, when his health started to weaken. He watched me make it and said it's easy enough for even him to make.

Thanks for some of the greatest tasting recipes I've ever found online.

I made these tonight and they were absolutely delicious. And they are so easy to make, I will definitely be making them again. I have 2 questions, though. First, what exactly does the sprite/7-up do? Do you have to use it, and do you know how much of a difference it would make to not use it? And second, mine tasted delicious, but unlike the picture you posted of the finished product, mine still had about 1/4" of the butter/soda mixture in the pan. My little dumplins were practically floating even after baking for 40 minutes. The only alterations I made to the recipe were using margarine instead of butter, ( I know, I hate myself for it too hahaha) and I used Mtn Dew instead of sprite. Any insight would be appreciated.

This looks awesome! I like others would like to know about using sprite or other canned drink. I do not drink any of these at all so I would like to leave this out. Can someone share the purpose of using it as well as what could be used in place of the drink or can it be excluded all together. I would like to make these for my mother who is diabetic so that would be another reason to exclude all the sugar in the drink.

The recipe only says a 1/2 CUP of soda, not a can or even 1/2 a can. Hopefully you used the correct amount.

Just made these for a party and they were a HUGE hit. Everyone wanted the recipe. Going to make them for Thanksgiving as well. Not that it matters, since they are so full of calories anyway but I cut out just a few by using a Sprite Zero because that was all I had on hand. You would never have known!

I add my soda to my wet ingredients, it foams a little and then pour it directly on the dumplings ...sometimes I sprinkle brown sugar light over top before baking...Never tried w/peaches...that sounds great ..

I have a question, I made these over christmas and thay were great! but i sprayed my square glass bakeing Dish with the pam non stick spray and when thay cooled off and i had put them in the refergerator due to i was not sure if these Dumplins could sit out or not well thay really stuck to the pan Do you have any sugestions for me so next time i make them thay will not stick to the pan???? Thank you!

This sounds wonderful! I can't wait to try! For those trying to avoid the citrus , I would suggest using ginger ale. I'm thinking it would be a plus addition to the taste as well as the aroma. That is what I plan to use. For those trying to keep their sugars or carbs low, (diabetics) use a combo of alternative sugars (I like to use Splenda and stevia) and then use a diet soda.

Two tips:

To keep it from sticking, you can use parchment paper.

For the person who is allergic to citrus, what about just using sparkling water with some sugar added to it?

I just tried these...yummy! I used reduced fat crescent rolls (that's what I had on hand). There was lots of butter left in the pan when I was done, so next time I will try cutting it in half and maybe increasing the 7-Up. May also try a little less sugar. Such a great "base" recipe to play with...thanks!

These were good but needed to amp them up a bit. Instead of cinnamon on the roll up it was brown sugar. I lightly salted the apples - once rolled up I sprinkled sugar/cinnamon over the top. The sugar/butter/vanilla mixture was added when it was foaming - almost like marshmallows.... poured over the top... added the squirt. You can't eat just one!

Omgoodness. This had got to be the best thing. Ever!!! It's a combo of all my favorite thing. I literally just made it and ate one. My house smells like movie popcorn, fresh bread and Apple pie. My three favorite smells. At first I thought I used too much liquid bc it was covering half of the wrap but the crescent roll soaks it up. The bottom is ooey gooey and the top is munchy crunchy and best of all, they're small, quick and the easiest recipe for even beginner bakers like me. I can go on and on about how it's my new favorite thing in the world. This is going on my holiday menu. Thank you!!

Hi, Iive in Australia and would love to make these but, we don't have crescent rolls here. Would it still work if I made them with puff pastry? Love your recipes.
